By Nate Mills – The music industry is worlds away from where it was before the digital era. 20 years ago, the notion of kickstarting a music career with limited resources and no record label wouldn’t have been practical for most, but nowadays it’s common practice. More and more artists are being self-sufficient or signing to small indie labels rather than the majors (Sony, Warner and Universal), with the rise of the internet and digital platforms such as iTunes, YouTube, Spotify and TikTok now making this a more feasible option, and some of the best music out there today comes from these artists. In this recurring column, we’ll be uncovering and highlighting 10 hidden gems to listen to from talented independent musicians.
Green Arthur – “Pine Needles”
Green Arthur (Peter Dorrien Traisci) hails from New Fairfield, Connecticut, and is based in Newport, Rhode Island. Having released his first official single, “Breaker Boy”, to a great reception last year, the rising musician, who is now based in Newport, Rhode Island, is back with his new single and first release of 2023, “Pine Needles”. Drawing from a wide range of influences, the track stands out with its eerie production and Green Arthur’s captivating vocal performance. Making such a huge impression with only his third release, it’ll be exciting to see what else he has in store as more music is expected in the coming months, and surely he’ll be one to watch.
Jaja Morph – “My Way”
Jaja Morph is a rising star on the music scene whose journey as a rapper and music artist began during the 2020 lockdown period. Hailing from south London, UK, Jaja Morph is of mixed heritage, with a Nigerian father and a Jamaican, Scottish and Chinese mother. His unique blend of cultural influences is evident in his music, and his distinctive, flavourful sound has earned him a fast-growing fanbase. He has no plans of slowing down anytime soon and has just unveiled his new single, “My Way”.
