By Nate Mills – The music industry is worlds away from where it was before the digital era. 20 years ago, the notion of kickstarting a music career with limited resources and no record label wouldn’t have been practical for most, but nowadays it’s common practice. More and more artists are being self-sufficient or signing to small indie labels rather than the majors (Sony, Warner and Universal), with the rise of the internet and digital platforms such as iTunes, YouTube, Spotify and TikTok now making this a more feasible option, and some of the best music out there today comes from these artists. In this recurring column, we’ll be uncovering and highlighting 10 hidden gems to listen to from talented independent musicians.
Green Arthur – “Pine Needles”
Green Arthur (Peter Dorrien Traisci) hails from New Fairfield, Connecticut, and is based in Newport, Rhode Island. Having released his first official single, “Breaker Boy”, to a great reception last year, the rising musician, who is now based in Newport, Rhode Island, is back with his new single and first release of 2023, “Pine Needles”. Drawing from a wide range of influences, the track stands out with its eerie production and Green Arthur’s captivating vocal performance. Making such a huge impression with only his third release, it’ll be exciting to see what else he has in store as more music is expected in the coming months, and surely he’ll be one to watch.
Jaja Morph – “My Way”
Jaja Morph is a rising star on the music scene whose journey as a rapper and music artist began during the 2020 lockdown period. Hailing from south London, UK, Jaja Morph is of mixed heritage, with a Nigerian father and a Jamaican, Scottish and Chinese mother. His unique blend of cultural influences is evident in his music, and his distinctive, flavourful sound has earned him a fast-growing fanbase. He has no plans of slowing down anytime soon and has just unveiled his new single, “My Way”. Tapping into his Nigerian heritage while also maintaining a UK sound, the Afrobeats track is an undeniable earworm and perfect for the summer season.
J. Hoard – “Devil Is A Liar”
J. Hoard’s music interweaves genres to articulate his vivid songwriting. The multitalented NYC artist has an eclectic approach to music that has yielded songwriting collaborations with artists such as Black Coffee on the 2022 Grammy-winning Subconsciously album, Chance the Rapper on the 2017 Grammy-winning Coloring Book album and Brasstracks. No matter the genre, J. Hoard always delivers and makes a huge impression, as can be heard on his new single, “Devil Is A Liar”. With “Devil Is A Liar”, J. Hoard speaks on the struggles faced by artists in the industry. Matt Cleare – “Evelyne!”
After impressing with previous single “4000!”, Miami-born, Atlanta-based artist Matt Cleare has returned with brand-new single “Evelyne!”. The genre-bending musician/producer/songwriter is currently preparing for the release of his upcoming EP, Butterfly Twist!, and “Evelyne!” is the perfect track to build anticipation and give fans a taste of what they can expect. The single looks set to follow the success of the project’s lead single, “4000!”, which received critical acclaim and became Matt’s most streamed track to date. “Evelyne!” continues Matt’s genre-fusing style and is equal parts alternative R&B and rock with a psychedelic and nocturnal aura. Commanding attention instantly, the track hears Matt singing soulfully of a mystical woman and love under the moonlight over mesmerising electric guitar riffs and immersive drums.
Complete – “Tell Me Twice”
Complete is an Australian rapper who has been captivating audiences with his music and passionate, sincere storytelling since his breakthrough in 2018. He has accumulated a mammoth 100 million+ streams across all platforms, and his viral hit “Jordan” is certified Gold (ARIA) in Australia. He’s also recently announced his own record label, Move Over Records. With his sophomore album due later this year, he has just unveiled his latest single, “Tell Me Twice”. The goosebump-inducing single delves into Complete’s ongoing struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Casper Merci – “100 Foot Limousine”
Casper Merci from Indianapolis is expanding the possibilities of hip-hop to create a sound all his own. Tyler K, a remarkable 17-year-old rapper with autism, is breaking barriers and inspiring audiences with the release of his new album, SPECTRUM. Embracing his faith and the incredible journey that led him to this point, Tyler is using his platform to challenge stereotypes and champion inclusivity.
