More and more artists are being self-sufficient or signing to small indie labels rather than the majors (Sony, Warner and Universal), with the rise of the internet and digital platforms such as iTunes, YouTube, Spotify and TikTok now making this a more feasible option, and some of the best music out there today comes from these artists. In this recurring column, we’ll be uncovering and highlighting 10 hidden gems to listen to from talented independent musicians.
JoyRukanza – MatterMoreForSis
Zimbabwean musician JoyRukanza, known for her exceptional storytelling abilities through music, has released her long-awaited debut album, MatterMoreForSis. American-Swiss rising star Milune aspires to create a safe space for anyone struggling with issues like mental health, sexuality and discovering oneself in the midst of the rigours of life and love. “lunacy”, the latest indie-pop release from Milune, has a gripping feel. The song is best enjoyed through headphones with the volume turned all the way up and no doubt listeners will be captivated by her emotive vocals and intriguing production, which features guitar, synth and keys.
