Today, critically acclaimed guitarist and songwriter Terra Lightfoot is sharing her first new music of 2022 with the new single “Sleepyhead”, a track for all those hard-working people who have put their own needs on the backburner so they can be there for their kids. “They become personal chef, caretaker, doctor, driver, teacher, storytime performer, and monster-chaser, and do it all even when they’re completely exhausted,” says Lightfoot. “To be able to do that for somebody else, especially in a pandemic, you really have to love them.”
Recorded in her living room with engineer James McKenty, Terra says “Sleepyhead” is about “the fact that you would do anything for your kids, and if you could turn back time, even knowing how hard it was, and how sometimes it felt impossible to be able to be in ten places at once, that you’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Because that’s how much you love your kid. I’m not a parent myself, but I found it easy to go into the familiar territory of the everyday ups and downs of belonging in a family household.
Jimmy Bowskill later added some sparse strings from his studio in Cobourg, ON giving the song a lullaby-like quality. “We all have stories from childhood that our parents tell us so many times, it begins to feel like a real memory even though we were too young to remember it,” says Lightfoot. “For me, that shared ‘memory’ was getting in my mom’s car, driving around at night, and listening to music with her until I fell asleep. I feel sleepy just talking about it”
