Last Chance is Dog in a Man Suit’s existential questioning delivered in a post-punk anthem. The single from their newest EP, Trapped!, was performed by Billie Seeland (guitar, vocals), Anjali Nair (guitar, vocals, synths), Chris Seeland (bass), and Thomas Colgrove (drums).
While recording the song, the band had The Strokes’ First Impressions of Earth on repeat, which influenced the song’s groove and stacked riffs. Anjali has a penchant for weirdo chord inversions and surprising metric shifts, while Billie—originally a bassist—tends toward steady, driving pop-punk influences that provide a solid backbone. Their combined magic as the band’s primary songwriters is loudly evident in “Last Chance.”
It was written during a turbulent time in Anjali’s life after she left her first full-time job. For the first time ever, she was free to focus entirely on her own music. Instead of settling into a creative groove, she was plagued with uncertainty. “I want to be free/but I don’t want to break free.”
Dog in a Man Suit took that weight of a perceived “last chance” and turned it into pure creative drive by combining their musical strengths. Anjali explains, “There’s an unexpected struggle that comes from getting what you want. Once you have it, reality hits, and there’s a back and forth between trying to be grateful and the immense pressure of limited time.”
