Photos + Review Amanda Daubert – After two incredible days of musical performances, fans were back for the final day of Boston Calling on Sunday. With another stacked lineup of 17 sets across the four stages, it was time to finish this musical-marathon.
Welcoming festival attendees and kicking off day three were the six-piece Boston natives, Juice. With high energy and smooth vocals from three different vocalists, plus a diverse blend of rock, R&B, and soul, this all-encompassing genre-bending set was the perfect way to start the day. Juice was amongst another stacked line-up of Boston hometown sensations like two-piece emo-punk band Mint Green, indie performers Workman Song, the playful punk band Sorry Mom, the soulful beyond her years crooner Ali McGuirk, and the uniquely perfect Couch.
Starting things over on the Green Stage we found Brittish Alt-Indie group, Wunderhorse. Emerging from the ashes of The Dead Pretties is frontman Jacob Slater, along with Harry Fowler, Peter Woodin & Jamie Staples. This dynamic foursome, still celebrating the success of their debut album Cub, which dropped last October, made an impactful impression on the crowd. Their set featured some calmer rock tracks along with punk pop, higher energy hits, which had the crowd going.
Later in the day on the Green Stage was a commanding performance from the incredible Maren Morris. Known for her blend of pop, country, R&B and hip-hop, this Texas native brought her dazzling southern charm to an eager northeast crowd! Morris was humble yet powerful, both everything and nothing of what you might expect from an artist with 5 Academy of Country Music Awards, 3 Billboard Music Awards, a Grammy and several other awards and nominations to boot! Whether you’re a fan of her pop hits like “The Middle,” or her country tracks like “My Church,” Morris offered something for everyone in the crowd last night.
Headlining the Red Stage for day three were the late 90’s rock breakout group, Queens of the Stone Age. With hits throughout the last 3 decades, and their long awaited 8th studio album In Times New Roman just announced for release June 16th, Queens of the Stone Age were fueled with energy and excitement, this just their second performance in the last five years. The band commanded the crowd with a powerful sound that had fans singing along to hits like “Little Sister,” “Emotion Sickness” and “No One Knows.”
After an amazing three days, fans gathered at the Green Stage one last time for the headliner of all headliners, Grammy award winning punk-pop powerhouses, Paramore! Led by one of the most incredible female frontwomen, the emo princess herself, Hayley Williams. Paramore has been a radio and streaming staple for almost 20 years. Forming in 2004, Paramore has given our elder-emo hearts countless hits across their 6 studio albums, including their latest release, This Is Why, which just dropped in February. The setlist featured several tracks from their new album like “You First” and “The News” while throwing it back to their smash hits from earlier years with “That’s What You Get” and “Misery Business.” Williams offered an incredible energy, stage presence and truly fantastic vocals. It was a performance that was absolutely deserving of headlining this amazing festival!
As the final notes still lingered in the air, fans made their way through the gates one last time. Filled with unforgettable memories of some fantastic performances, delicious food, and new friendships, Boston Calling came to another successful end.
