At a time when women’s rights are being marginalized, even stripped away in some cases, the voices that rise up are more important than ever. North Carolina’s Cashavelly is one of those voices. Her sixteen song epic of an LP, Meditation Through Gunfire (UNCSA Media) explores so many angles of the war on female empowerment; from addiction to abuse, from rape to spirituality. It’s a heavy load, but Cashavelly handles it with remarkable poise. Today, we’re premiering the video for the single, “Ancestors.” The video, directed by James Wiley, is beautifully shot, featuring Cashavelly in a church bonding with a young woman, much like Cashavelly imagines with her maternal ancestors.
In her own words, Cashavelly says about the song “This song is about my grandmother and Mary Magdalene, my ancestors who are always with me, guiding me. With all the abuse and violation I’ve endured, that every woman on some level endures, no one can take them from me. I truly do believe now that our ancestors are with us, helping us.”
