Photos by Sharon Steele – James Bay is a British singer, songwriter, and guitarist known for his emotive voice, heartfelt songwriting, and genre-blending sound. Born on September 4, 1990, in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, he began playing guitar at age 11 and was inspired by artists like Eric Clapton and Ray LaMontagne. After studying at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music and performing at local open mics, Bay was discovered when a fan uploaded a video of one of his performances—leading to a record deal with Republic Records.
Bay’s breakout came with his 2015 debut album Chaos and the Calm, which included the hit singles “Hold Back the River” and “Let It Go.” The album topped the UK charts and earned him multiple Brit Awards, Grammy nominations, and international acclaim. He followed it with Electric Light (2018), showcasing a more experimental, pop-influenced sound, and Leap (2022), which returned to more stripped-down, emotionally resonant songwriting.
In 2024, Bay released his fourth studio album Changes All the Time, a project that blends folk, rock, and modern pop, featuring collaborations with Noah Kahan, The Lumineers, Holly Humberstone, and Brandon Flowers. With introspective lyrics and powerful live performances, James Bay continues to evolve as an artist while staying true to his roots in raw, authentic storytelling.
