Photos by Sharon Steele – Formed in Los Angeles in 1994, Goldfinger emerged as a cornerstone of the third-wave ska-punk explosion. The band was founded by frontman and prolific producer John Feldmann and bassist Simon Williams, who famously met while working together at a shoe store. After recruiting drummer Darrin Pfeiffer and guitarist Charlie Paulson, the group quickly built a reputation for their high-energy live performances and prolific touring schedule—at one point breaking a world record by playing 385 shows in a single year.
The band catapulted into the mainstream with their 1996 self-titled debut album, fueled by the massive success of the single “Here in Your Bedroom.” Their influence on alternative culture was further cemented when their track “Superman” was featured on the soundtrack of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game, becoming a definitive anthem for a generation of skate-punk fans. Over the following years, they released a string of successful albums including Hang-Upsand Stomping Ground, the latter of which featured their popular cover of Nena’s “99 Red Balloons.”
As the 2000s progressed, Goldfinger’s sound evolved, leaning more toward pop-punk and melodic rock on albums like Open Your Eyes and Disconnection Notice. During this era, John Feldmann also became a powerhouse behind the scenes, producing hit records for bands like Good Charlotte, Story of the Year, and The Used. Feldmann’s personal advocacy for animal rights and veganism also became a central theme for the band, often reflected in their lyrics and benefit concerts for organizations like PETA.
In recent years, Goldfinger has operated as a “supergroup” lineup, with Feldmann joined by punk veterans like Mike Herrera (MxPx), Charlie Paulson, and Philip “Moon” Sneed (Story of the Year). They have remained remarkably active, releasing the critically acclaimed album Never Look Back in 2020 and their latest record, Nine Lives, in early 2026. Decades after their formation, the band continues to be a driving force in the genre, balancing their ska roots with modern punk production.
