By Nathan Mills – The music industry is worlds away from where it was before the digital era. 20 years ago, the notion of kickstarting a music career with limited resources and no record label wouldn’t have been practical for most, but nowadays it’s common practice. More and more artists are being self-sufficient or signing to small indie labels rather than the majors (Sony, Warner and Universal), with the rise of the internet and digital platforms such as iTunes, YouTube, Spotify and TikTok now making this a more feasible option, and some of the best music out there today comes from these artists. In this recurring column, we’ll be uncovering and highlighting 10 hidden gems to listen to from talented independent musicians.
Bella Shields – “The Art of Letting Go”
Bella Shields, a Dublin-based singer-songwriter, has released her second single, “The Art of Letting Go”, a contemplative track centered on adolescence and emotional change. Following her debut “Claddagh Ring”, the 15-year-old artist continues developing her voice with a more inward-looking and reflective approach. The song focuses on the quiet transitions of growing up, including drifting friendships, identity shifts, and the discomfort of realizing people do not always evolve together. It also considers the strain of self-reinvention and the fading of openness as emotional walls form with age. Built around observation and personal reflection, the track captures the complexity of noticing change in others while processing one’s own. It stands as a step forward in her evolving songwriting style.
Clarity Liao – “Make Up Your Mind”
Emerging singer-songwriter Clarity Liao continues her evolution with fourth solo single “Make Up Your Mind”, a bright track about mixed signals and the courage to leave uncertainty. Amélie Giardini – “Sombre Maze”
Amélie Giardini, a Franco-Australian artist based in London, launches her debut single “Sombre Maze”, introducing her forthcoming project, Colour Bound, scheduled to unfold throughout 2026. The track circles around the sensation of getting caught in recurring thought patterns, where inner space feels both familiar and restrictive. It treats emotional low points with nuance, suggesting they can hold a strange mix of weight, familiarity, and quiet insight rather than being entirely negative experiences. The production leans into a cinematic, atmospheric palette, shifting between dense textures and softer passages to reflect emotional instability and release. Across its mood and message, the song points toward gradual clarity, emotional movement, and a sense of solidarity with others working through similar psychological landscapes.
