The ultimate day of the festival seamlessly blended powerhouse performances with the deep, collaborative spirit that has defined Newport for decades. As the afternoon ocean breeze swept across the lawn, the sense of community only grew stronger, culminating in an evening that will be talked about by the “folkfam” for years to come.
The festival’s traditional all-star closing set, headlined by Nathaniel Rateliff & Friends on the Fort Stage, exploded into pure Newport magic as an unbelievable roster of surprise icons joined the fray. The crowd was sent into an absolute frenzy when legendary voices Joan Baez and Mavis Staples stepped out to share the microphone, followed by a jaw-dropping appearance from Dave Matthews. It was a beautiful, generational passing of the torch that perfectly crystallized the festival’s unique ability to bridge musical history and contemporary roots energy in a single, unforgettable jam session.
Earlier in the evening, the emotional centerpiece of the day belonged to Brandi Carlile, who delivered a mesmerizing, deeply introspective late-afternoon set billed appropriately as “Returning to Myself.” Taking the Fort Stage just after an eccentric and captivating performance by Father John Misty, Carlile commanded the stage with a vulnerability that held thousands of fans completely captive. Her powerful, roof-raising vocals soared across the harbor, reinforcing her status as one of the festival’s most beloved anchors.
Meanwhile, the other stages across the fort kept the energy dialed to the max with phenomenal, boundary-pushing sets. Guitar icon Tom Morello blew the roof off the Quad Stage with raw acoustic-rock power, following high-octane performances by the funk-infused Fearless Flyers and a surprise-filled weekend run by Brandon Flowers. Down at the Harbor Stage, a massive collaborative roots set featuring Peter Rowan, Sam Grisman, and Sierra Hull brought the festival back to its traditional string-band foundations, ensuring that the 2026 edition closed out with the perfect harmony of past, present, and future.
