Article by Nathan Miller – The music industry is worlds away from where it was before the digital era. 20 years ago, the notion of kickstarting a music career with limited resources and no record label wouldn’t have been practical for most, but nowadays it’s common practice. More and more artists are being self-sufficient or signing to small indie labels rather than the majors (Sony, Warner and Universal), with the rise of the internet and digital platforms such as iTunes, YouTube, Spotify and TikTok now making this a more feasible option, and some of the best music out there today comes from these artists. In this recurring column, we’ll be uncovering and highlighting 10 hidden gems to listen to from talented independent musicians.
Max Swan – “LMK”
Philadelphia-area songwriter, composer, producer and vocalist Max Swan returns with “LMK”, an intimate new single built around piano, voice and understated production. The song grew from verses written before a 2021 flood and later took shape as Swan rebuilt his home, with an old voice memo helping revive the chorus. His stripped-back arrangement brings together piano, EWI, sax, cello and bass, while the accompanying music video documents the rebuilding process from the flood’s aftermath to the finished home. Shaped by jazz, alternative R&B, soul and classic musicianship, “LMK” centers on showing up for friends, family, others and yourself. It is a warm, direct and hopeful release from an artist whose music is closely tied to his life experiences.
BRYANT KEITH – “IMPATIENT”
Independent R&B artist, songwriter and producer BRYANT KEITH returns with “IMPATIENT”, a dark and lush single lifted from his forthcoming EP, THE LOVE PACT. Built on a contemporary R&B foundation with early-2000s R&B influence, the track explores the psychological intensity of yearning as desire, uncertainty and emotional exhaustion collide. Written and produced by BRYANT in his home studio, the song was created using an AKAI MPK keyboard, a drum pack featuring chops and soul samples, and a series of revisions over 10 hours. BRYANT describes his approach as “psychological R&B”, using songwriting to examine existential, spiritual and emotional themes. “IMPATIENT” turns personal turmoil into atmospheric R&B centered on longing, attachment and emotional desperation, offering a compelling preview of the upcoming EP.
The Real Anthem – “Coming Home”
Arizona alternative rock band The Real Anthem deliver “Coming Home”, a deeply personal single driven by anthemic guitar riffs, steady percussion and emotionally charged vocals. Blending alternative rock, post-punk, post-rock and shoegaze, the band build the track around big guitars, heavy textures and soaring vocals that converge into memorable melodies. The song explores resilience, identity and finding solid ground in an unpredictable world, while its heaviness was shaped by the aftermath of war experienced secondhand through the band’s connection to a Vietnam veteran. Accompanied by a performance-driven music video, “Coming Home” captures The Real Anthem in a raw and organic setting. Led by Shawn Helton, Andy Mitchell and Matt King, the band continue to showcase a sound that balances heavy textures, atmosphere and melody.
Dysmusia – “In your eyes”
Irish singer-songwriter Dysmusia returns with “In your eyes”, a heartfelt single about the emotional pull of a relationship caught in a cycle of breaking up and making up. Blending acoustic folk with indie rock, the track explores the uncertainty that remains when memories of an old love refuse to fade, including the possibility that seeing them again could reignite feelings thought to be over. Influences including Stephen Wilson Jr., The Waterboys, The Pogues, Pixies, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan inform the sound, with dropped-tuned acoustic guitar paired with a second guitar in standard tuning. Based between Antrim and Dublin, Dysmusia brings Irish storytelling traditions together with a modern indie-rock edge. “In your eyes” adds another thoughtful entry to his growing catalog.
jon scott – “YOU ARE SO REAL”
Singer-songwriter jon scott returns with “YOU ARE SO REAL”, an uplifting single centered on love, gratitude and the people who help us through difficult moments. Written during his recovery from complex spinal surgery, the song draws on the support he received from his wife and celebrates the encouragement that helped him through rehabilitation and back toward his creative work. Musically, “YOU ARE SO REAL” takes a retro-inspired approach, drawing on classic soul and old-school love songs while maintaining a laid-back and celebratory feel. scott’s vocals carry the song’s sense of appreciation and renewed optimism, giving the track a warm emotional center. Personal without losing its universal message, “YOU ARE SO REAL” is a heartfelt celebration of the people who stand by us when we need them most.
Pembroke Tenneson – “Sex Appeal”
Californian singer and guitarist Pembroke Tenneson introduces “Sex Appeal”, a storming rock single that playfully pokes fun at the pomp and self-importance associated with headline rock acts. Inspired by the brash energy of early-1970s rock, the track turns the dial up on exaggerated confidence while keeping its tongue firmly in cheek. Tenneson’s musical outlook draws from classic rock influences including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and The White Stripes, while artists such as The Kinks, Joni Mitchell, Joe Walsh and Wheatus inform his lyrical approach. “Sex Appeal” is the first release from a collection of 14 original tracks, giving fans plenty to look forward to over the coming months.
Ron-Ian Cottam – “Far Away”
Ron-Ian Cottam returns to music with “Far Away”, a single written by Billy Marlowe and released in collaboration with Hotdog4theMoon. The song marks a meaningful return for Cottam after a period away from music, having previously enjoyed performing it with his friend and fellow musician Stéphane De Schryver. Cottam’s musical career includes work as a musician, producer and engineer, as well as involvement in Hotdog4theMoon’s Lunar Country CD. “Far Away” centers on leaving trouble behind, choosing freedom and finding the determination to move forward. That straightforward theme gives the track a strong sense of purpose, while its return to Cottam’s repertoire makes the release particularly significant. It is a welcome new chapter for an artist reconnecting with music and a song that already held personal meaning.
Oskar Brandt – “Now or Never”
Berlin-based singer-songwriter Oskar Brandt makes his debut with “Now or Never”, a cinematic orchestral pop single built around sweeping piano, expressive strings and rich orchestration. Drawing inspiration from RAYE, Sam Smith and OneRepublic, as well as musical theater and film scores, Brandt places emotionally driven songwriting at the center of the track. “Now or Never” focuses on a relationship tested by personal struggles, capturing the tension between emotional distance and the possibility of reconciliation. Brandt’s soft yet commanding vocal sits at the heart of an arrangement that gradually expands around him, while acclaimed cellist Dave Eggar adds an organic dimension to the production and Heather Holley contributes as producer. The result is an assured introduction to an artist building a sound around narrative, atmosphere and complicated emotions.
The Songs of Butler & Cupples – “Therapy”
The Songs of Butler & Cupples continue their genre-fluid 2026 run with “Therapy”, a polished alt-pop single featuring vocalist MAVIS. The songwriting-led project moves into a more sensual space here, pairing airy melodies, understated percussion and buoyant synth work with clean contemporary production. Rather than operating as a conventional band, The Songs of Butler & Cupples function as an open creative framework built around collaboration, musicianship and a songwriting-first approach. “Therapy” reflects that philosophy through production that knows when to move forward and when to leave space, while MAVIS brings sensuality and melodic clarity to the track. Following releases that have moved across electronic pop, rock and more experimental territory, the single adds another perspective to an evolving catalog that remains deliberately free from fixed genre boundaries.
Sanjay Michael – “Baby Baby”
Singapore-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Sanjay Michael brings classic rock energy into the present with “Baby Baby”, a sultry, swaggering single inspired by the high-energy spirit of 1970s and 1980s rock ‘n’ roll. Raised between Malaysia and Australia and now based in Singapore, Sanjay combines thunderous guitar riffs, infectious choruses and blues-driven attitude. The track draws on influences including Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses and Van Halen, while his conversational, almost spoken vocal delivery gives the song its own personality. “Baby Baby” follows his debut album, Rocking Into Midnight, and the stripped-back Wall Street Blues EP, building on that earlier work with a bigger, more expansive sound. Its accompanying video features Sanjay and his band performing in a bar setting, reinforcing the song’s distinctly rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere.
