Photos by Sharon Steele – Michael “Mike D” Diamond is a founding member of the legendary hip-hop trio Beastie Boys, whose career transformed him from a downtown New York punk rocker into a global music icon and influential cultural tastemaker. Born and raised in New York City, Diamond co-founded the Beastie Boys in 1981, initially as a hardcore punk band. As the group pivoted toward hip-hop, Mike D helped pioneer a raucous, genre-bending sound that bridged the worlds of rock and rap, paving the way for their explosive 1986 debut album, Lincensed to Ill, which became the first hip-hop record to top the Billboard 200 chart.

As both MC and drummer for the group, Mike D brought a distinct swagger, sharp lyricism, and visual flair to the Beastie Boys’ evolving artistic vision. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he helped steer the band through landmark releases like Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, and Ill Communication. Beyond performing, Diamond played a crucial role behind the scenes as a co-founder of Grand Royal Records and Grand Royal Magazine, platforms that championed underground talent, alternative culture, and eclectic musical tastes worldwide.

Following the Beastie Boys’ induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 and the passing of bandmate Adam “MCA” Yauch, Diamond continued to expand his creative footprint. He has produced records for bands like Slaves and Portugal. The Man, hosted the popular Echo Chamber radio show on Apple Music, and worked on interior design and visual arts projects. Today, Mike D remains celebrated as a true pioneer whose work permanently reshaped the landscapes of hip-hop, alternative rock, and youth culture.
