Emma Currie’s passion for music runs through her blood as her great grandmother was a trained opera singer. The Vancouver-based singer-songwriter began performing as a child at local showcases which eventually led to her fronting the vocals of her highschool’s R&B band and working with producers Adam Stanton and Jamie Kuse on a number of original songs. Currie has since performed at various events in and around the greater Vancouver area including Canada Day 150 celebrations, Harmony Arts Festival, and the Vancouver Christmas Market and has been a featured anthem singer for Jr. hockey teams in the greater Vancouver area, the Vancouver Canadians Minor League Baseball Team, and for the SMART 2017 BA Conference at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver BC.
Please take a moment and give us some background info about becoming an artist?
In highschool, I was in my school’s Theatre Company and R&B Band. They helped me immensely, especially when it came to performing and working on my stage presence. I also took many singing, music, and writing classes outside of school to help further my studies, find my sound, and develop as an artist. Through mutual friends, I was introduced to Warren Dean Flandez, and through him, I’ve been able to work with incredible writers, producers, and perform around the lower mainland in and around Vancouver, BC.
Tell us a bit about your musical direction.
I’m continuing down the pop/R&B route. It’s the perfect fit for my voice and songwriting. One thing I’ve done differently in the past couple years is writing more from personal experiences that I’ve never shared before. However, it’s been very therapeutic and enjoyable because it makes my music relatable and real. I want my music to always be relatable, but have a fun side to it!
Tell us about the recording process behind Klara
I worked with Jaime Kuse who is an incredible producer and super friendly guy! The vibes in the studio were light and fun, despite the song being the complete opposite, and that helped me relax a bit so I could really channel the emotion I felt when I wrote the song. After listening back to the track, we agreed that the song needed another voice for background vocals, and Aileen De La Cruz was the perfect fit. She added some haunting backing vocals that intensified the song and took it to the next level.
Are there any shows upcoming to showcase your talent?
At the moment, unfortunately not. It’s been very difficult to find opportunities to perform with the pandemic going on. However, I’m very hopeful that before the end of this year I’ll do some shows!
What is the biggest struggle for you as a musician at the moment?
Finding opportunities to perform and promote my music. Traveling, in-person interviews, shows, all of that is a huge part of the music industry and it’s very limited right now.
How have you been keeping creative during the Pandemic?
I’ve actually been writing about things that have happened to me in the past that I haven’t written about yet, even if it was years ago. To my surprise, there was a lot!
What are your plans for the rest of 2021?
My EP just came out, so I’m hoping I can find some opportunities to perform the songs live soon. Also, expect more music!
Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with in particular?
Oh I would cry if I ever collaborated with Shania Twain. She’s my all-time inspiration! I also think collaborating with Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber, or The Weeknd would be so much fun!
When you kick back, who are some of the artists you listen to?
I listen to so many different artists. I always find myself listening to Little Mix, Aretha Franklin, Justin Bieber, Queen, Elvis Presley, Dan + Shay, I’ll even blast some songs from Disney movies.
