Eloah Jones’ music conjures a hypnotic singer-songwriter vibe, instantly relatable confessions that call to mind the plummy depth of influences like Lana Del Rey and Banks. These sounds inspire so many descriptions. Edgy pop. Alternative. Jazz. But beneath those labels are the emotions that give them life: vulnerability, a yearning for connection, a longing for home, a need for love.
Exclusive Q&A with Eloah Jones about the song and her music.
What inspired you to write this song? What is the story behind it? What is it about?
“Dancing on My Own” is a song I wrote about one of the many struggles of being a woman. People think the way we dress, why we go out, and our main goal in life is to please men. And that’s just not the case. When I look good and go out, it’s for me. Not for anyone else. I was sick of people missing the point. So I wrote “Dancing on My Own” in hopes that other women could relate.
Do you consider this song — and your music in general — a place for you to work through things that are weighing on you or that you are trying to process? Do you find songwriting therapeutic? Did writing this song help you in some way?
Absolutely. I’m not a super open person when it comes to emotions and feelings. A lot of the time, I feel so much at once that I can’t process it. Writing is so helpful for me. Sometimes my brain feels like a huge beehive. Writing helps me slow down, process how I’m feeling, and get those feelings OUT.
What was the recording session like for this song?
It was super fun. I worked with Aaron Bonus and Damian Malnar on this specific track. They’re two really great and talented people that I trust a lot. The song is super sassy, so we had a lot of good laughs in the studio while recording it. I’m really lucky to have recorded this in such an accepting environment with such understanding people.
What do you hope listeners hear in its music and lyrics?
Like what I’ve stated before: WOMEN WERE NOT MADE TO PLEASE MEN. And I hope those listening can find some confidence with this song, too. Do what you want, wear what you want, and say what you want. Never let someone make you feel like you owe them something. Disrespectful people do not deserve respect in return. And remember that life is what you make it, so have fun. Live for YOU.
This song is from your forthcoming EP. What made you want to release this song into the world before the album comes out?
I wanted to release this song first, because it captures so many different emotions. It’s fun, it’s sexy, it’s dark… It’s all the things that I am. I’m very proud of the whole upcoming EP, but especially this song. Because I really said, “Screw it,” and said whatever I wanted. This song makes me proud of the woman I’ve become. I hope it makes listeners proud of themselves, too.
