Today, Montreal-based endearing lo-fi, dream pop trio Afternoon Bike Ride share their final, beautiful title-track “Glossover” (feat Lowswimmer). The track is taken from their upcoming sophomore album, glossover and accompanied by footage shot between February 1st – March 5th 2022 while writing & recording the record. Glossover is out this Friday, February 10, 2023 via out via Courage Records & Friends of Friends.
On the track, band-member Lia shares: “This song took a while for me to write, I couldn’t land on exactly what I wanted to say for months until I conjured a memory of sunrise in Montreal from when I used to go out super late in my early twenties. It felt like time had stopped, the city was incredibly peaceful and the sky gifted the most beautiful gradient. I thought about other moments that felt meditative and how because we have no control over the constant ebb of time, all we can do is cherish those moments for what they are and live through them. This song started from a piano-based demo that Ed had sent over to David after they’d first started connecting, it sat for quite a while and went through a couple iterations of reharmonization; with a couple of folks trying to help us along with how the song felt.
It sat in David’s hard drive for a while; with him and Éloi both slowly adding elements of synth and instrumental work to flush out the world first created by Ed. When Lia came back with the finished vocal melody it stopped us all in our tracks. We reverted a lot of iterations the song went through and filled out what was already there with Ed’s original pianos, the song practically finished itself by that point.”
Afternoon Bike Ride will also be embarking on their first tour in support of glossover. The tour kicks off in March at Baby’s All Right in New York, where the band will then continue their ride with stops in Vermont, Ottawa, Toronto, and a hometown show in Montreal. Get your tickets here.
About Afternoon Bike Ride:
Afternoon Bike Ride is a lofi folk trio providing a comfort zone in audio form. It’s in the name. When all three artists are together, their chemistry culminates into one organic and lush sound. Sonics that feel natural and freeing, as if fireside with a handful of microphones and instruments and toys. “An audio diary,” the band describes, “of what we know will be our most cherished memories.”
A Montreal-based Canadian trio consisting of Lia (vocals, guitar, programming), David (vocals, guitar, drums, programming), and Éloi (vocals, keys, drums, programming), the band has released a series of cohesive projects where field recordings blend with ambient, acoustic, folk, and pop. A cauldron of genres they stir during each song. With precision, Afternoon Bike Ride presents a soothing sound all their own, one that continues to expand and deliver with each new release.
While their sound is unique and very much their own, this band is still relatively new. The three artists gathered traction with their debut EP, sugarbloom, in 2019, and further evolved with their self-titled debut LP Afternoon Bike Ride in 2021. While initial stems and demos were emailed back and forth, the group put the finishing touches on glossover while in a cabin in St. Donat, Quebec. “We’ve been pegged as three separate entities,” the band says, “and for this album especially, we really felt as one unit writing and creating for ABR and nothing else.”
