“Nightmare Town” is about the feeling of desperation, and a desire to leave one’s hometown. With inspiration from the 1973 film, Badlands, and the characters who wanted to escape their circumstances. Not only do the lyrics elicit a yearning for adventure, but so does the arrangement of the instrumentation such as the driving drum beat.
You said “my daddy’s got a shotgun in the shed,
why don’t we blow ’em all away and keep this house all to ourselves?”
And I know it was a joke but something was going through my head
about the power of the gun and what I could do with it.
The characters in the song are absurd and overdramatic to refer to their quiet suburban upbringing as a “Nightmare Town,” illustrating their immaturity and lack of realism.
