Bedouin Soundclash’s original song “Brutal Hearts” has been reimagined by superstar DJ and producer Diplo. The song was originally released on the 2010 Bedouin Soundclash album Light The Horizon. Diplo’s version titled “Use Me (Brutal Hearts)”, released on Friday, features Dove Cameron and Sturgill Simpson as his alter ego ‘Johnny Blue Skies’. A cinematic video for the track featuring Cameron andSean Penn was also released. Bedouin’s original “Brutal Hearts” video was directed by award-winning filmmaker Bruce McDonald and featuresCoeur de Pirate.
“You know, I consider myself a songwriter first. It’s my true love in music,” says Malinowski. “So to see a song like ‘Brutal Hearts’ get reimagined is amazing. Music for me is all about interpretation and creating new worlds. Wes (Diplo) is pretty genius at that. They played us the new version when I was down at his studio in March and Dove and Sturgill’s voice together blew me away.” He adds, “I have to laugh though. I wrote this song in and out of bars at a very different time in my life, scribbling notes on napkins and scrap pieces of paper, and to see those words come out of Sean Penn’s mouth is a real trip. I love it.”
As for the inspiration for the song, Malinowski says, “When I wrote ‘Brutal Hearts’ I was tired of hearing love songs about a knight in shining armour saving someone. I thought I’d dig into trying to capture two anti-heroes in darkness, and through their honesty find some light. I think that’s why the song connects, because we are all both hero and anti-hero.”
