BIG WRECK has released a brand new single from their upcoming EP. “Bail Out” exemplifies the band’s ever-growing ability to see where the bar is, and raise it with each note. Grabbing hold of the listener from the first chord, “Bail Out” sees the band seamlessly fusing gorgeous harmonies with hard rock riffs and opulent vocals.
Recently announcing that they have joined the Sonic Unyon Records family, Big Wreck’s forthcoming ‘Pages‘ EP will mark their debut release with the label. Set to drop on November 24th, the album is locked and loaded with six brand new tracks, sublimely arranged and permeated with the unrelenting sonics that have kept them at the top of the genre for over three decades.
‘Pages‘ sees Big Wreck once again rewrite the code for rock music. At the start of 2023,Ian Thornley (guitar/vocals) started work shopping the songs for the band’s eighth studio effort. After sharing the music with long time friend and producer, Nick Raskulinecz, it became clear that he was not only excited about the direction, but that he was the only choice to lead the production charge on this effort. Fast forward to May of 2023, the band began pre-production with Nick and entered the studio with Chris Holmes at the desk, and Nick directing the sessions. Over the span of two weeks, the band tracked 18 songs which will be shared through a series of EPs – with ‘Pages’ marking the first.
“Going directly from pre-production to the studio helped capture the essence of these songs and kept the spirit of the writing in tact, without going too deep into demoitis,” says Thornley. “Ian is a monster writer, a monster player, and gave us all so much to work with here. My job was to make sure we got the best version of the band in the performance of these songs in the studio. We got that, and more,” says Raskulinecz.
All songs on ‘Pages‘ were written and composed by Ian Thornley and performed by Big Wreck. The album was recorded and mixed at Noble Street Studios in Toronto, Ontario, sees guest backing vocals on ‘Weightless’ by Tyler Tasson, was produced by IanThornley, Eric Ratz, Nick Raskulinecz, engineered by Chris Holmes with assistance from Dex Piecowye, mixed by Eric Ratz with assistance from Zach Pepe, mastered by Andy VanDette and edited by Nathan Yarborough.
Long-time mixing engineer, Eric Ratz was the natural fit for this first EP – rekindling the ‘dream team’ of Eric, Ian, and Nick. Big Wreck fans will remember the magic that was created when Albatross was born in 2012. An album that has delivered multiple chart topping singles, and is now a GOLD certified album. Following up on the “7” releases of 2021 and 2022, the band will once again visit the EP model. “These days, with attention spans where they are and demands on peoples time being what they are, I want to believe that smaller servings lead to the entire collection being heard.” reflects Thornley.
Covering all the bases of what fans have come to love about Big Wreck, the EP leads off with the 7+ minute track, “In Fair Light”, which explores new textures and new territories for the band. It then takes a right turn into the driving alt-rock track, and first single, “Bail Out”. The core of the EP is filled with a blend of rich colour and artistry with tracks “Summerlong”, “Weightless”, and “White Lies”. The final track is a tip of the hat to some of the biggest influences of Ian and Big Wreck with the track, “Bird Of Paradise”.
