London dark-alt pop duo Charlotte Spiral release their evocative sophomore EP New Light. New Light confronts and examines themes of loss, escapism, dissatisfaction, self-comparison, and more. The duo teamed up with Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey (Kae Tempest, Bat For Lashes, Sia) to produce the EP. To celebrate the release of the New Light EP, Charlotte Spiral have also shared a captivating and contemplative video for their latest single “Out Of Here.” “Out Of Here” was directed by Thomas James (Honeyblood, Ghostpoet, Paloma Faith, etc…) and presents a surrealist dramatization of heartbreaking issues that are prevalent in society today. In the video, the two characters struggle to find purpose and meaning in their seemingly mundane lives while reflecting a shared and parallel existence of loneliness and isolation. We follow both characters until their paths ultimately cross; colliding in a cinematic and climactic dance sequence that provides to them both a shared escape from reality. This desire for escapism is echoed in the lyrics of the song, where the decision is made to break free from a monotonous cycle and take control of one’s own destiny.

“There is something about doing things over and over again in a monotonous way that makes a situation feel worse than it is, and I wanted to portray this throughout the song,” says lead singer Amy Spencer.

“The track has such a beautiful and romantic quality; an elegance and sensuality – I wanted to explore this, but with an underlying ‘modern’ loneliness.” Adds director Thomas James. “A contemporary surreal heart-wrench.”

More on Charlotte Spiral:
Charlotte Spiral is a collaboration between Amy SpencerAvi Barath; two musicians that have been involved in multiple projects respectively before coming together to form the duo. Having met at Goldsmiths, the pair connected due to their mutual love of artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Julia Holter, Moses Sumney, Yann Tiersen and Beach House, and their inherent desire to write music that is lyrically driven and built upon organic piano melodies.

The group’s debut EP Ideal Life confronted themes of self-hood, self-doubt, yet ultimately self-belief. The lead track, “Wide Eyed”, was produced by Charlotte Spiral and Dan Carey, evincing vocals that are lush and nostalgic, soaring above ethereal piano and polished production. The release garnered widespread praise from the likes of The Sunday Times, The Line of Best Fit, Music Week and BBC 6 Music, amongst others.
