Following a run of entrancing singles, Daisy Glaze, helmed by Louis Epstein (HITS, Jump Into The Gospel) and Alix Brown (Angry Angles w/ Jay Reatard, Golden Triangle), will release their debut self-titled album this Friday (2/25) via The Sound of Sinners. Today, the duo shared the final slice of psych-rock with the video for “Ghost of Elvis Presley,” first premiered via BlackBook. Hazy, hypnotic instrumentals meld easily with the duo’s mesmerizing lyrics that muse over celebratory nihilism in the face of disintegrating past structures, with a wild, dream-like video to match.
In the video, Daisy Glaze take a detour to a macabre Memphis presided over by the ghost of Elvis. Time tripping into the forbidden zone of the midnight hour, the duo find themselves across the tracks in a world where time stands still no matter how old you are. Directed by Michele Civetta (The Gateway, Agony), who has helmed music videos for Lou Reed, Curtis Harding, Ladytron, Sean Lennon and more, the video was filmed at the nostalgic Arcade Restaurant in Memphis, TN, and features a guest appearance by the iconic producer Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell (Royal Studios).
Though only their debut album, Daisy Glaze arrives fully formed; a nod to the psych-outlaw sound of the past with a definitive eye on the bleak side of the present. Produced by the legendary Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, MGMT, Beach House, Iceage etc) and featuring over 10 tracks, the duo explore the sinister side of prismatic love and the different hues therein. Or as they explain, “More blues than pinks. Imagine the immortal words of Socrates who said ‘I drank what??’ But replace the poison he drank with Love.” Previous singles “Call Me Midnight” and “Strangers In The Dark” leave no doubt that the band offers up a sound that’s seemingly plucked straight from the soundtrack of a lost cinematic western in space.
In 2016, Louis and Alix started writing songs and playing live with a 5-piece band, sharing the stage and headlining shows at various venues in New York City with The Black Lips, The Coathangers, Curtis Harding, and others. In 2019, the two flew to Portugal to record their debut LP with acclaimed producer Sonic Boom, who was an outsized influence on their sound and songwriting prior to working with him. Combining Louis’ pop influences with Alix’s rock n’ roll bonafides, the two developed a sweeping cinematic sound that incorporates elements of Ennio Morricone, Jack Nitzche, and the much-loved ragged pop of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood — with the visual aesthetics to match.
