Singer, songwriter and daredevil Eddy Lee Ryder creates surprise-filled songs infused with rock and pop that tell dramatic stories filtered through a slightly cracked lens. We had the opportunity to ask her a few questions and here’s what she told us.
Care to introduce yourselves to our readers?
My name is Eddy Lee Ryder & I am a singer-songwriter from NY. Big voice, bigger hair, utterly terrible cook.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
The sound of my music is very inspired by classic rock artists and sometimes those 70s classic rock artists in the 80s. But the topics I am singing about I think are more current to the times- sometimes apocalyptic themes disguised in happy sounds or playful lyrics but I write very truthfully from my own experiences.
Tells us about the story behind the single, “There in Dreams.”
“There in Dreams” is a song losing someone you are close with and the only time you get to see them is in dreams. It can be an equally great and tough experience. For me, the song is about my dad and trying to get to him in dreams, but I tried to leave the lyrics open enough that anyone can envision their own story.
For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
My live performances are fun. I am finally playing with a band consisting of some of my favorite players in NY – so I have really been loving how the band sounds these days. I have been told the show highlight is my theatrical rock opera song “Are You Taking Me Into the Woods to Kill Me or to Show Me the View?” which is a little more over the top than most of my other songs.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
“Expected to Fly” (coming out July 10th)
So who are your current favourite bands/ artists?
Weyes Blood, Sharon Van Etton and diggin’ this new artist who only has two songs out so far but I have been listening to them on repeat all week- Katie Wood.
What post COVID-19 plans are in your future?
If I squint and pretend to see things as normal — I have a few projects I am hoping to record, lots of shows coming up in September on the west coast (fingers crossed) and hopefully a long road trip!
