Vancouver-based singer-songwriter and musician Haley Blais eases us into the holiday season with her beautiful rendition of “Auld Lang Syne”produced by Sam Tudor, released today.

“In the iconic end scene of the most important romantic comedy of all time, When Harry Met Sally, the titular Harry hears ‘Auld Lang Syne’ playing and says, ‘What does this song mean? My whole life, I don’t know what this song means.’ That really resonated with me,” Blais explains. “I listen to ‘Auld Lang Syne’ every year, it is arguably one of my favourite holiday songs, but I never quite got it. Sally explains it horribly saying, ‘Well maybe, it just means we should remember that we forgot them, or something.’ This didn’t help me at all, but no matter the meaning, it always felt a little sad. Change, endings, cheap bottles of champagne and warm beer; these are all things we have to face with the ending of a year and the start of a new one. Change always makes me sad, so, I guess I looked at this song and thought, how can I make it sadder?”
