This year will be 30 years since Andrew Nolan started working in the music industry and yes he’s still at it however, Andrew only recently released his first single and earlier this year hit the Top 11 in the Digital DJ Download Chart with the single ‘When I’m With You’.
Now Andrew’s back with the long awaited follow up with the song ‘Every Dream Has Broken’.
Welcome Andrew, please tell us about the new single?
I was looking for a follow up after the success of the Sakgra Remix of ‘When I’m With You’ and David ‘Buzz’ Buswell of Crazy Dog Records contacted me and asked if I would like to collaborate with him on a new track he was working on.
David has recently had a number one in the UK Heritage Chart with the single ‘Fallout’ which he co-wrote for 80s icons ‘’Tight Fit’ who I’m sure you remember had a massive number one in the 1980s with ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’.
This particular song was originally recorded by Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz, another massive 80s band however, the song was never released as a single although it’s a fan favourite and it appeared a few years ago on a Lost Masters LP.
I’ve always been a fan of Bucks Fizz or ‘The Fizz’, as they are known now, and I have always loved this particular song.
It’s written by Andy Hill who has written many of the Bucks Fizz singles as well as tracks for Celine Dion, Cliff Richard, Westlife, Lulu, The Wanted and Cher. I think you will agree that ‘Every Dream Has Broken’ is a hidden gem and deserves to be heard and is a radio friendly pop masterpiece and I think everyone will love it.
Why has it taken so long for the follow up to ‘When I’m With You’?
We did the first two tracks with DWP Records in Australia and although we tried a few ideas we didn’t really have anything new ready, then there was this opportunity to work with Crazy Dog Records who are literally just down the road from me.
Initially we had another track in mind as the first single however, as sometimes happens, we weren’t quite happy with the result and then we did ‘Every Dream’ and it just seemed to click together and seemed the obviously choice for the new single.
Music is a journey and sometimes things don’t always go to plan but we learn and move on.
Although I have my own recording equipment and I don’t need to go into the studio, it is much easier with the record company being in the UK. I haven’t completely closed the door to DWP Records so if we had the right track of course I would work with them again but they are also very busy with lots of different projects.
For the new track you have worked also with Sakgra again?
When we released the Sakgra remix of the last single ‘When I’m With You’ we were inundated with requests for an extended mix for DJs.
Sakgra has remixed hundreds of tracks by artists including Kylie Minogue, Years and Years and gives them this fantastic retro 80s Stock Aitken and Waterman vibe. It felt right after the success of the last track that we should work together again and I wanted to give something to the DJs to play so that’s why we have a 12” Extended DJ version.
Are you not worried that the songs have the right sound for today’s markets?
Many people will know my views on this, music spans hundreds of genres and I know pop is not to everyone’s taste, you may think it’s ‘throw away music’, ‘happy go lucky’ or that some may think its dated, but dance pop has never really gone away its just evolved over time.
For me, music should help make memories or transporting the listener to a time when they first heard a song, that feeling when you hear a melody and instantly remember what you were doing.
I like to make great pop music with a good melody and a happy message which parents know their children can listen to without fear of political views or inappropriate language being heard.
I love hearing feedback good and bad and I also like to listen to many different music artists of different genres. I enjoy making the music I want to hear and it’s a bonus of others enjoy it also.
So what’s next for Andrew?
We have been putting together a few songs for a live PA set but I really needed a few big songs for this and for when I’m performing at festivals etc, I could do all cover versions but I want to do my own songs also. It has taken me a bit longer than expected but I have the set about there now so hopefully some live work, a support tour, pride events and maybe some festivals in 2023 would be good.
It’s been a tough time for many artists as music is their livelihood and the pandemic meant that they didn’t work throughout this period that has affected all our lives, for me it gave me opportunity to make some wonderful music and again work with some fantastic talented people. We need to get out there and support our live artists and music venues.
In the past you mentioned collaborations?
I would love to work with another pop act or maybe an artist from the 1980s. I’m happy to sing other people’s songs as well as recording new material so I’m open to opportunities.
The next priority is finishing my album which I would like to have ready by the end of the year and I have already been offered some great tracks so can’t wait to record them but maybe include a collaboration there also.
What can we expect from the album?
My ideas change daily on this, of course we need to include the singles and some of the extended mixes but I would like to include new songs, maybe some ballads and possibly a couple more cover versions.
I can’t say too much currently but we have been working on a couple of tracks and some fantastic writers involved.
Because I grew up in the 70s and 80s I remember the joy of buying a physical product so it needs to be released as a CD or vinyl, something you can hold, touch and smell with some nice pictures, pull outs and the lyrics so you can sing along and learn the songs. Plus I’m terrible remembering lyrics so I can take it on stage with me!.
The current single ‘Every Dream Has Broken’ is available now on all platforms including; itunes, Amazon, Deezer and Spotify.
