Mackenzie’s new single “Dial Tone” is available via all streaming platforms. The catchy new track is a relatable tune about a guy who comes across as a self-centred, uninteresting, dial tone personality type. In 2020, Mackenzie released new music, partnering up with esteemed producer Jeff Dalziel (2018/2019 Canadian Country Music Association Producer of the Year) on her dreamy-love-ballad “Before You”. The song was a first day add to Spotify’s “Live Country” and Amazon’s “Breakthrough Country” playlists and has garnered over 60,000 streams so far on Spotify alone.

Her vibrant stage presence and dynamic live show has been wowing audiences on some of country music’s favourite stages such as Boots and Hearts, Havelock Jamboree, Lucknow’s Music in the Fields, and landed her a finalist spot in the Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase and a CMA Ontario nominee hyperlink to the CMAO website for “Roots Artist of the Year” in 2019.

Who is Mackenzie Leigh Meyer?
Hey! I’m a Country/Roots Artist from Hamilton, ON, CA.

Tell us about the recording process behind “Dial Tone”.
This song is born out of the pandemic, so unique to this release, every part was tracked separately from each musician’s home! and written over Zoom. Very different from how I would normally go about bringing a song to life, but I’m thrilled with how my producer Jeff made everything sound. It’s really amazing what we can pull off over the internet these days.

What was the inspiration behind your new single, “Dial Tone”?
“Dial Tone” for those who don’t know, is slang for “dull boring or uninteresting person” ie) John has all the personality of a Dial Tone. So admittedly, the reason I wrote this tune was because I found myself getting caught in conversations like this. Ones I wish I could have “hung up on” so to say. So “Dial Tone” was born out of some frustration lol.

Who played on the new single?
Produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Jeff Dalziel.
Recorded at Dieselmusic Studios Oshawa, On
Mackenzie Meyer – lead vocals, backing vocals and acoustic guitar
Jeff Dalziel – drums, percussion and acoustic guitars
Pete Lesperance – acoustic guitars, electric guitars and dobro
Jeff Brown – electric guitars
Justin Kudding – bass guitar
Brendan Waters – B3 organ
Mitch Jay – pedal steel
Brandi Sidoryk – backing vocals

Is there a moment or memory in your life as a musician that you always want to hold onto? Or a moment that has taught you a lot.
I will always hold onto the time I got to play Boots and Hearts as a part of the Emerging Artist Showcase in 2019. To this day it is still my biggest show. The fans that come to that festival are so vibrant. Even when they’re supporting artists they don’t necessarily know. It makes performing there SUCH a blast when all everyone wants to do is just have a good time. I’m grateful to have gotten to play a show like that.

How would you describe your music in three words?
Authentic, relatable, and fun!

What are some venues that you would love to play in the future?
Because I’m from Ontario, most of the shows I do are out here, but I’d love to play a show at the Calgary Stampede, or in another province in general. I had the privilege of jumping up for a few tunes with my friend Kelsi Mayne in her set this year, so I know it a fun festival. But I’d love to have a set of my own one of these days.

What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
Honestly, it’s hard to pin point “what” about music makes me feel passionate, but I think the creative component is what I like most. Before I started performing, or even singing for that matter, I was always writing little songs on piano. Eventually when I figured out how to sing, I started adding lyrics. And still today, creating is my favourite part of the whole thing.

What are your plans for the rest of 2021?
Well currently, I am working on having as many people as possible hear “Dial Tone”! But this song may or may not be the little prequel to an EP that I have in the works ;). That’s all I’m going to say!

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with in particular?
I think I will say this until the day I die, but Kacey Musgraves. She is my all-time favourite artist. Such an incredible lyricist and musician. I would literally die if I had the opportunity to write a song with her.

When you kick back, who are some of the artists you listen to?
I listen to a TON of Canadian Country music. There are so many indie musicians here that have amazing music that doesn’t always get heard because the market’s too competitive. I particularly love Nicole Rayy, Kelsi Mayne and Graham Scott Fleming. I think they are doing awesome stuff.

Any fun facts or hidden talents you would like to share?
HAH! Well, a bit embarrassing, but I do a pretty good impression of Tiny Tim. If you don’t know who that is, google “tip toe through the tulips”.
