Los Angeles based pop-quartet SZNS give a fresh new take on the classic 90’s girl group music we all know and love with blending elements EDM, Latin-synth, and House inspired beats. A perfect example of this sound can be heard on SZNS single “Build A Boy” written by SZNS along with Stefan Litrownik (One Direction, Boyz II Men) and Jason Hahs, with production by K-Kov & Stefan Lit releasing May 27th. Each member Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn bring their own unique vocals and styles that blend together to create the vibrant SZNS sound.
How long have you all known each other?
Winter: It’s now going on two years that we’ve been a group and known each other but it feels like a lifetime. We’ve gone through so much in the last two years.
Please take a moment and give us some background info about SZNS?
Summer: Before SZNS I was going to school and dancing every day. When I came across this group it just felt so right. I know we were all pursuing our own stuff in the arts but knew when we came together we could make something so magical.
When you first started the band, did you have a sense of which type of music you wanted to make, or did it take a while to land on a sound?
Winter: All of us grew up in different genres of music, as kids, but we all love the feeling pop gives you. So honestly, it was pretty easy because we just blended all our favorites into the SZNS Sound.
Summer: we try to never fit into a specific sound because we find it too limiting in the studio. Whatever we feel like making, whatever it sounds like, we make!
Tell us a bit about your musical direction.
Autumn: what I think is really special about us is that since we each are so different and varied styles we each can get inspired by different genres and bring them together!
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Spring: The music that we make is empowering, unique and authentic. We just want girls to feel comfortable and sexy in their bodies.
What was the inspiration behind your new single, Build A Boy
Summer: we wrote this song right when I was coming out of my first breakup and let me tell you heartbreak is… painful. I felt like I was able to get a lot of my heartbreak and anger and sadness out into this song.
Tell us about the recording process behind Build A Boy
Summer: we recorded this song with our amazing friend Stefan Lit! It was a super emotional day in the studio I think for all of us. We really tried to be as vulnerable and honest as we could with our performances.
Do you have more new music scheduled to come out this year?
We’re hearing something about 4 EPs
Spring: Late Summer we have an EP coming out that we are really excited for! Who knows what the rest of the year will bring, we kind of go with the flow.
When you kick back who are some of the artists you listen to?
Winter: My music taste is all over, but what really sets me into a vibe.. Mumford and Sons. Love those guys.
Spring: I’ve been super in to the women’s rap movement! I love me some cardi, Megan and bia. Also can’t forget my idol, Selena Quintanilla.
Summer; I love always finding new music to listen to but some of my forever favorites are Gaga Ariana grande and David Bowie.
Any fun facts or hidden talents you would like to share?
Summer: I’m pretty good at changing my hair color about once a month. My hair is begging me to chill but I just get so bored
