Victoria Anthony is back with her 4th single release of 2022 called “Should’ve Known”, a high-energy, angst-infused Alt/Pop single about a crash-and-burn relationship where she felt like she should have known better for trusting that former special someone.
The 17-year-old Vancouver-based artist has been unstoppable this year, releasing singles for “Stupid Kid”, “Kinda Into You”, and “Bad For Me”, as well as conceptualizing, writing, and co-directing music videos for each and racking up over 1.8 million streams and views for the tracks. She also toured the US early this year with American pop-rock band Hey Violet.
The timing of the new release comes as Anthony is on a 15-date tour of the UK and Europe with American pop singer Leah Kate. This will be her first overseas tour where she is performing for audiences in England, Ireland, Scotland, The Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, and Germany.
“Should’ve Known” is the first single from her forthcoming sophomore album, due out for release in Spring 2023.
Congratulations on the release of your new single “Should’ve Known”. What can you tell us about the song?
“Should’ve Known” is a song about a breakup where I should’ve seen the red flags from the start. I wrote the song with Tavish Crowe, co-writer of “Call Me Maybe”, and Ryan Worsley, who has been a longtime collaborator of mine.
Your sound has evolved since the release of your debut album “Real Life” in 2020. How would you describe your sound then and now?
With my debut album “Real Life,” I had only been writing music for about a year and a half. Although it was a strong first release and laid a great foundation for my career, I was really just finding myself as a songwriter. “Real Life” was very pop, but now I am diving into more experimental sounds, deeper lyrics, and personal subject matter. My new much has more of a pop-punk edge.
You are currently on a 15-date UK and European tour with American pop singer Leah Kate. How’s the tour going so far?
Being on tour in the UK and Europe with Leah Kate is a dream. I’ve been meeting amazing people in every city, and everyone has been so kind and so excited about my new music!
This is your first overseas tour. How is it different from previous shows and tours you have done in Canada and the US?
Touring overseas has been a treat. The big difference is that every city has a unique personality, and I get to explore across 8 countries in 4 weeks. It’s almost unfathomable. My favourite part of touring overseas so far has been all the accents! So far, we’ve only done the UK leg of the tour, but already, I love hearing the way everyone says “hour”. Haha! On our first day of rehearsals, we found a cute little Blues spot, and my drummer Ricky hopped on the drums! Jamming all day every day!
When you first started did you have a sense of which type of music you wanted to make, or did it take a while to land on a sound?
I think finding my sound is a constantly evolving mission. I am always growing and figuring out what will get my message across the best.
Is there a moment or memory in your life as a musician that you always want to hold onto? Or a moment that has taught you a lot?
Although I was not a musician at the time, I think singing to P!NK at Rogers Arena in Vancouver in 2018 is the moment I will always remember as what inspired me to pursue music. She whispered in my ear to “never stop”, and that inspired me to start writing music. It’s the moment that set me on the path I am on now.
