Hazy, heady, hedonistic and hopeful. JEEN introduces her forthcoming LP, Gold Control, with lead single “Just Shadows” today, putting a firm foot forward for this luminous ten tracker. Its quick frantic pace bounces along and transports the listener to those communal sweaty nights in dodgy, body-packed underground clubs with the band five feet away making all feel as one.
Gold Control is her fourth album this decade, gliding along the same trajectory as its predecessors while maintaining its own identity. Grunge. Garage. Psych-rock. Punk. Tinges of Shoegaze. Her influences continue to shine as she crafts them into her own vehicle with ease. JEEN joins creative forces once again with long-time collaborator and co-producer, Canadian indie musician Ian Blurton, who has taken on this role for JEEN’s last five albums.
“I wrote ‘Just Shadows’ thinking how the darker parts of everything can snuff out some of the best people’s light. It’s about trying to get out from under it so we don’t just become casualties of our shittiest days.” She elaborates, “I lost all my demo projects for this upcoming album in a massive computer failure last year, so Ian suggested we just go in and jam the songs a bunch top to bottom and re-demo them before we started tracking for real. We had never done it that way for the previous albums; always just worked off my home demos as opposed to rehashing the songs prior with the full band. Anyway, it was super fun to go a little deeper on these songs at that early stage and I think the whole LP is better for it.”
An established and successful songwriter with a penchant for crafting hooky, sync-worthy songs, JEEN has penned songs with many recording artists including Great Big Sea, Serena Ryder, Res, Hawksley Workman, Brendan Canning, FUWA FUWA (j-pop) and Martin “Doc” McKinney. The talented Toronto-based artist was the vocalist and co-writer for the Cookie Duster LP When Flying Was Easybefore releasing her solo LP Tourist in 2014 which, along with her sophomore LP Modern Life in 2016, Gift Shop in 2018, JEEN in 2020,Dog Bite in 2021, and Tracer in 2022, have resulted in significant sync success with song placements in various commercials as well as notable movies and televisions shows.
