Vancouver’s Kimmortal shares the new single “This Dyke”, a hypnotic club-ready queer anthem that solidifies the artist as an acclaimed one-to-watch singer-songwriter for 2023. Following their latest soulfully reflective ballad “I Can’t Trust You”, their new single picks up the pace while still showcasing what Kimmortal does best: lyricism that delivers a resonating message. Inspired by numerous queer pioneers in club culture, including the late-and-great hyerpop producer SOPHIE, Peaches, and new up-and-comers like Tommy Genesis, Vials, and Rina Sawayama, “This Dyke” takes on a life of its own with a pulsating beat that is equal parts sparse as it is sexy. With fiery and bold lyrics to match the production’s thumping energy, the finished result is an empowering proclamation of queer joy and embracing one’s feelings of sensuality.

“I wanted to create a sexy banger for the dykes, for femmes, for my queer community, and ultimately for me because I have never fully leaned into expressing my queer sexuality in a track and my journey of getting here is what I am most proud of”, says Kimmortal.

“This Dyke” is self-produced by Kimmortal, but the presence of community that surrounds the creation of this track is still felt. Kim was mentored by sonic storyteller, producer, performer, and visual artist I/O, who is also a founding member of s.M.i.L.e, a music event collective in Vancouver. Kim then brought the track to life at Helm Studios, a recording studio that serves to uplift the voices of underrepresented artists in their community by making sessions accessible and equitable. The single art and music video for “This Dyke” was designed by Filipino-Canadian visual artist NOFAC3, known for her unique clay animation that touches on surrealist experimentation and expression of queer identity through multimedia art.
