Krista Hartman’s upcoming single, “Lullaby” from her 4th record, Transcend is an up-tempo and spirited anti-lullaby. The song in itself is a perfect juxtaposition. “Lullaby” is a slumber party song, it’s meant to wake us up instead of lull us to sleep. “I wanted to write a nighttime song about keeping vibes high, about getting the party started instead of zoning off to sleep. Lullabies are historically characterized for being meditative, melancholic and calming. I wanted to write a lullaby that didn’t conform to this sentiment, I wanted to write a lullaby that was the complete opposite— effervescent, vibrant and lively.”
Krista Hartman is an Ottawa based singer-songwriter originally from The North Country in Canada. She was raised in a remote small town called, Peace River, Alberta. Her musical father inspired her to pick up a guitar and taught her that music was the cure to boredom. When she graduated high school, she boarded a plane and backpacked and busked for tips on the streets with a borrowed guitar across Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. She became drawn to teaching English in South Korea and writing songs. After traveling abroad, she attended the University of Alberta, where she studied English and Theatre by day and recorded and performed original songs by night, connecting with artists and troubadours along the way.
The inspiration collected from her travels led to her first rustic self-produced Canadiana record, Passport which was recognized in Edmonton’s Vue Weekly Magazine as one of the top ten records of the year. When it was time to tour, she moved to New York, started bartending and toured across several American states.
By 2008, Krista relocated to Toronto and began recording her second record, Nostalgia (a record that chronicled the characters she met while touring through the US). She was joined on the first single, “Broken in Two” by Juno Award winning songwriter, Ron Sexsmith. The highlight of her year was performing a bi-lingual version of The Canadian National Anthem Canada’s Prime Minister at a Gala hosted by The Canada India Foundation. By 2015, she had lived in St. Lucia and Chicago with her young family and ventured to Toronto to record her third record, Constellations- a catalogue of songs devoted to the power of optimism.
Krista is known for her desire to genuinely connect with others through her heartfelt music. Her latest record, Transcend, explores themes of alignment and contemplates the connection between mind, soul body and spirit. It was produced by Jordon Zadorozny who has co-written songs with Courtney Love.
