Toronto-based Life in Polaroid has just released its sophomore single “Lo Down with You”, an infectious tune that blends modern pop sensibilities with a nostalgic 80s retro vibe. The track, which features vocalist Nick Moore, transports the listener to an era of neon lights and retro chic and offers a fresh sound that’s impossible to resist.
The single is accompanied by a retro low-fi music video that perfectly compliments the song’s timeless allure:
Life in Polaroid is the brainchild of Rory Dyck, a seasoned musician whose career has spanned over two decades and has included extensive touring in Canada and the US, sharing the stage with artists such as Sheryl Crow, 54-40, Blue Rodeo, and Tegan and Sarah. Dyck was the principal songwriter and guitarist in several indie bands throughout the 2000s, most notably Ottawa’s Hennessey.
Life in Polaroid’s sound mixes stylistic elements of contemporary pop acts such as Dua Lipa and Harry Styles with the songwriting aesthetic of artists like Crowded House and Paul Simon. Dyck’s ability to write songs with catchy hooks with rich and uplifting vocal arrangements creates a unique sonic landscape that will appeal to a wide range of listeners.
Life in Polaroid grew out of a series of weekend sessions in Rory’s home studio. What started as an experiment in recording some of Rory’s new songs quickly blossomed into a collaboration with other artists and producers. “The minute I invited a few friends in to help, the project took on a life of its own, Dyck explained. “Having other artists add their distinctive character to the songs brought them to life in a way that I couldn’t have otherwise imagined”.
Earlier this year, Dyck unveiled Life in Polaroid’s debut single, “Be There with You”, a fusion of contemporary pop elements and reggae-inspired guitar stylings. The song masterfully juxtaposes Dyck’s emotive, melodious choruses with the richly resonant, melancholic verses delivered by featured artist Victor Byenkya.
