Back to Stay is a song Penelope Antena felt inspired to cover because John Martyn is a hero of hers. It’s a compelling story, and dear to her heart, as she’s been listening to it with her parents since she was a little girl. The accompanying music video is something very personal to her, sharing home footage of my family’s summer vacation. She likes the idea of growing up into a different person, but still feeling the same love for someone – a lover, child or friend.
And when she holds you, it might not be you I have, in the passing days, we might both have changed to something new.
She took a more ‘naked’ approach to her music with this gentle ballad, in which her voice takes centre stage alongside pianist Joshua Piper and guitarist Jeremy Ylvisake (John Prine, Bruce Hornsby, and Bon Iver). Back to Stay is from penelope’s sophomore full-length album, Beamorose, out August 19 on Youngbloods.
