Photos by Orest Dorosh – 54-40 is a Canadian alternative rock band that was formed in Vancouver in 1981. The band’s name comes from the latitude of the Canada-U.S. border, which is 54° 40′ north. The band’s original lineup consisted of Neil Osborne (vocals, guitar), Phil Comparelli (guitar), Brad Merritt (bass), and Matt Johnson (drums).
54-40 released their self-titled debut album in 1986 and quickly gained a following with their catchy melodies and insightful lyrics. Over the years, the band has released numerous albums and singles, with notable hits including “One Day in Your Life,” “Baby Ran,” and “Ocean Pearl.”
Despite lineup changes over the years, 54-40 has continued to tour and release new music, earning a reputation as one of Canada’s most enduring and influential rock bands. They have won several awards, including two Juno Awards for Best New Group in 1990 and Best Video in 1991.
With a sound that blends elements of alternative rock, pop, and folk, 54-40 has earned a loyal fan base both in Canada and around the world. Their music is known for its introspective and thought-provoking lyrics, as well as its memorable melodies and energetic live performances.
