She was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, and began her musical career as a member of the folk duo Po’ Girl. In addition to her work with Birds of Chicago, Russell has also collaborated with artists such as Norah Jones, Anais Mitchell, and The Chieftains.

Russell’s music is a mix of folk, soul, and Americana, and she is known for her powerful vocals and emotive songwriting. She has released several albums with Birds of Chicago, as well as two solo albums, including the critically acclaimed “Outside Child” in 2021. Russell’s music often explores themes of family, identity, and resilience, drawing on her own experiences growing up in a multicultural household and overcoming personal challenges.

In addition to her work as a musician, Allison Russell is also a vocal advocate for social justice issues, including racial equality and LGBTQ rights.
