Photos by Shannon Guest – Grace Evelyn Potter, born on June 20, 1983, in Waitsfield, Vermont, is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist renowned for her powerful vocals and dynamic stage presence. She began her musical journey at a young age, learning piano from her mother and later mastering guitar and drums. Potter attended St. Lawrence University before fully committing to her music career. In 2002, she formed the band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, which gained recognition for its blend of rock, blues, and Americana. The band released several albums, including Nothing but the Water (2005) and The Lion the Beast the Beat (2012), before disbanding in 2015 following Potter’s divorce from bandmate Matt Burr.

As a solo artist, Potter has released five albums: Red Shoe Rebel (2002), Original Soul (2004), Midnight (2015), Daylight(2019), and Mother Road (2023). Her work spans various genres, showcasing her versatility and evolution as an artist.Notably, her 2019 album Daylight received Grammy nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Performance.Mother Road was inspired by a transformative solo road trip along Route 66, capturing a raw and introspective narrative.
Beyond her music, Potter is known for her energetic live performances and collaborations with artists like Kenny Chesney and The Rolling Stones. She has performed at major festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo, and has shared the stage with legends like Robert Plant and Neil Young. In addition to her musical endeavors, Potter is involved in charitable work, particularly supporting the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of her grandfather.
