Photos by Orest DoroshSt. Vincent (Annie Clark) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer, known for her unique blend of rock, pop, electronic, and experimental music. Born on September 28, 1982 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she grew up in Dallas, Texas. She began playing guitar at a young age and later attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston but dropped out to pursue her music career.

She first gained recognition as a member of the band The Polyphonic Spree and later as part of Sufjan Stevens’ touring band before launching her solo career in 2006 under the moniker St. Vincent.

St. Vincent’s self-titled album released in 2014 won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, making her the first solo female performer in 20 years to win in that category. Her music is known for its complex arrangements, innovative use of guitar, and thought-provoking lyrics. St. Vincent often explores themes like identity, power, and modern alienation.

Her discography includes critically acclaimed albums like:

  • “Marry Me” (2007)
  • “Actor” (2009)
  • “Strange Mercy” (2011)
  • “St. Vincent” (2014)
  • “Masseduction” (2017)

St. Vincent is also known for her striking visual aesthetics, frequently collaborating with fashion designers and filmmakers to create bold, avant-garde looks and music videos. Beyond music, she has ventured into filmmaking, directing the segment “The Birthday Party” in the horror anthology “XX” (2017).

Her style and genre-defying music have made her a leading figure in contemporary alternative music.
