Dashboard Confessional

Singer/songwriter Christopher Carrabba became the poster boy for a generation of emo fans in the early 2000s, having left behind his former band (the post-hardcore Christian outfit Further Seems Forever to concentrate on vulnerable, introspective solo musings. Armed with an acoustic guitar and soul-baring song lyrics, he christened his new project Dashboard Confessional — named after a lyric in “The Sharp Hint of New Tears” — and began releasing material in 2000. By 2001’s The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most, Dashboard Confessional had evolved into a full-fledged band, but Carrabba nevertheless remained the focal point of both the group and the rejuvenated emo genre.

Charlotte Sands

Charlotte Sands isn’t afraid to speak or play loud. Raised on the pop-punk bands of the early 2000s and rooted in the storytelling of folk singer/songwriters, Sands combines upbeat melodies with unabashedly honest, self-reflective lyrics.

In November of 2020, she leaked a song called “Dress” that she wrote about Harry Styles wearing a dress on the cover of Vogue. Within hours, the song became an anthem of self-expression for thousands (now, millions) of listeners across the globe.

The electric-blue-haired singer/songwriter’s musical career didn’t start with the overnight success of a viral song. At 18, she stole her mom’s car, found a roommate on Craigslist, and left her home in Hopkinton, MA for Nashville, TN, with a plan to take a year off of school before attending Berklee College of Music. She never went back.

She then dropped 7 singles from her bedroom during lockdown in 2020 and has since bulked up her catalog with captivating songs and collabs that her fans can’t get enough of. Dubbed an “unstoppable force” by Alternative Press, Sands has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

Sands’ personal mission to “create a safe space for people to feel accepted and celebrated for their weirdness and diversity” is something she takes seriously. As evident by the overwhelmingly positive comments that flood her social media, her fans take pride in championing her as they recognize how she champions them.

Fefe Dobson

With a career spanning nearly two decades and decorated with several awards, nominations and music certifications to her name, multi-platinum recording artist Fefe Dobson is a true renaissance woman within the entertainment industry. Emerging as a pop / rock artist in the early 2000’s, Fefe stood out among her contemporaries as an edgy black female outlier in an otherwise male dominated genre. Her Platinum Certified (Gold in America) eponymous debut album (2003) was released to critical acclaim, earning the 18 year old new girl on the music scene 4 consecutive top 10 radio singles including ‘Bye Bye Boyfriend,’ ‘Take Me Away’ and ‘Don’t Go (Girls & Boys)’. The single ‘Everything’ was a fan favourite that was featured on the soundtrack for Paramount Pictures hit teen comedy ‘The Perfect Score’ (2004). The album received multiple award nominations including 2 JUNO Award nominations and catapulted the young pop / rock artist into international stardom as the album officially debuted at #1 on the Billboard HeatSeekers album charts and landed her an opening slot of Justin Timberlake’s 2004 Justified Tour across Europe. Upon returning to North America, Fefe dove into the acting world, appearing as one of her biggest influences, the iconic Tina Turner on the hit NBC series American Dreams. As an accomplished songwriter Fefe has penned hit songs for the biggest names in pop music including Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Jordin Sparks between releasing her own material for her follow up album ‘Joy’ (2010).

Fefe’s sophomore album was a breakout success with two platinum certified top 10 singles ‘Ghost’ and ‘Stuttering’ and the gold certified hit ‘Can’t Breathe,’ a collaboration with legendary music producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd) and guitar solo by recording artist Orianthi. In 2011, Fefe joined the cast of Sudz Sutherland’s independent film “Home Again” alongside Tatyana Ali and Stephen James, in the supporting role of Cherry C, which debuted at the world renowned Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2012. This feature film acting role earned her a nomination at the 2012 Canadian Screen Award for Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. To follow up the success of her album “Joy,” Fefe released several buzz singles intended for a future project, including the radio singles “Legacy” which initially premiered on the hit teen drama series ‘Degrassi’ in the summer of 2013 and “In Better Hands” in 2014. In late 2014, Fefe took a hiatus from her own music projects to focus on writing behind the scenes for other artists, after relocating to Nashville, Tennessee. During the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2019, Fefe (alongside Canadian pop star Tyler Shaw) assembled some of Canada’s biggest artists including Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne and Bryan Adams for a charity single of the late Bill Withers’ ‘Lean On Me’ which raised over $300K for COVID-19 relief efforts in her native Canada. In early 2020, Fefe teamed up with legendary songwriter and producer Linda Perry for ‘White Line Runaways’ a song which was featured on the HBO MAX film ‘Unpregnant’ (2020) soundtrack.

Grandson

This time around, grandson wasn’t pulling any punches. He’d always been a fearless artist, one unafraid to take aim at authority, fight the power and let his listeners know exactly how he felt. But in recent times, the genre-mashing rock artist, who has long released soul-baring music, decided to reveal himself like never before. “My whole career and my whole relationship to songwriting has been driven by this real need to leave a mark and to feel understood,” says the Canadian-American artist born Jordan Benjamin. “And yet I felt that I had been doing myself and my fans, who have now been on this journey with me for half a decade now, a disservice. I felt like we didn’t even have an honest conversation the whole time. I didn’t feel like I was bringing all of me to the table.” To that end, grandson wrote, recorded and is set to release his most personal and vulnerable album to date.

Plain White T’s

Since emerging in 1997, Chicago quartet Plain White T’s – Tom Higgenson [vocals), Tim Lopez (lead guitar, vocals], Mike Retondo [bass], and De’Mar Hamilton (drums) – have remained visible and viable. They have consistently delivered unforgettable pop rock anthems that take up real estate in your brain for months at a time. They have amassed over 2.7 billion total global streams, earned two Grammy nominations, and collected several Platinum-plus and Gold certifications across their impressive catalog. Their signature single “Hey There Delilah” went quadruple-platinum, topped the Billboard Hot 100, and earned the pair of aforementioned GRAMMY® nominations in 2008 – for “Song of the Year” and “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.” They have made their pop culture mark by appearing on highly visible shows such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Sesame Street, /Carly, 90210, Beavis & Butthead, and Frankenweenie, all the while nabbing press accolades from TIME, Billboard, ESPN, Rolling Stone, AV Club, MTV, MSNBC, and more.

Stereos

With the release of Cheap Thrills, Stereos’ first album since 2010’s Uncontrollable, the freshly reformed Canadian pop act tap into a new sound; one that will evoke a powerful sense of nostalgia in fans, but also display their stellar talents as individual players and the undeniable chemistry that drove their initial popularity.

Featuring original members Patrick Kordyback (lead vocals), guitarists Miles Holmwood and Robb Chalifoux, and drummer Aaron Verdonk, Cheap Thrills finds the band expanding dramatically on their signature sound. But while the record showcases Kordyback’s growth as a songwriter and his willingness to expand on the styles and sounds he brings to his writing, lyrically it’s rooted in the experiences from Stereos’ first go around as well as what’s happened in their lives since then.

Nowhere is that clearer than on ‘Sunset Gold’. Released in February 2020, ‘Sunset Gold’ is a powerful, pulsing pop track – and a perfect introduction to Stereos’ new direction. It’s also the first track Kordyback wrote after the band’s 2019 sold out reunion shows in Toronto and Edmonton. “’Sunset Gold’ really means a lot to me,” Kordyback says, adding that although the song reads like a love tune, “For me, I was 100-percent writing about the band getting back together.”
