Photos by Sharon Steele – The Kills is a rock band formed in 2000 by American singer Alison Mosshart and British guitarist Jamie Hince. The duo met while Mosshart’s previous band, punk rock outfit Discount, opened for Hince’s band at the time, Scarfo. Impressed by each other’s musical talent, they began collaborating and eventually formed their own band.
The Kills gained recognition for their raw and gritty sound, combining elements of indie rock, garage rock, and blues. Their music is characterized by Hince’s aggressive guitar riffs and Mosshart’s powerful and soulful vocals. Lyrically, their songs often touch on themes of love, lust, and rebellion.
In 2003, The Kills released their debut album, “Keep On Your Mean Side,” which received critical acclaim for its stripped-down and intense sound. They followed up with several successful albums, including “No Wow” (2005), “Midnight Boom” (2008), and “Blood Pressures” (2011). Their most recent album, “Ash & Ice,” was released in 2016.
The duo’s live performances are known for their high-energy and captivating stage presence. Mosshart’s charismatic and dynamic persona, coupled with Hince’s infectious guitar playing, creates an electric atmosphere that draws in audiences.
Over the years, The Kills have toured extensively, performed at major music festivals, and gained a loyal fanbase. They have also collaborated with other notable artists, such as Jack White of The White Stripes and Saul Williams.
Through their career, The Kills have established themselves as one of the influential and respected rock bands of the 2000s. Their unique blend of genres and intense live shows have solidified their place in the alternative music scene and continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
