Photos by Brad Goldstein – Trombone Shorty, born as Troy Andrews on January 2, 1986, is a highly acclaimed trombonist, trumpeter, singer, and bandleader from New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned his nickname “Trombone Shorty” from his early years when he played trombone at such a young age that the instrument appeared oversized on his small frame.
Growing up in the historic Treme neighborhood of New Orleans, Andrews was immersed in the city’s rich musical heritage from an early age. He was surrounded by jazz, blues, and brass band music, which heavily influenced his musical development. His older brother, James Andrews, a respected trumpeter, also played a significant role in mentoring him.
Trombone Shorty gained recognition as a prodigious talent in his youth, performing with various brass bands and jazz ensembles throughout New Orleans. He quickly garnered attention for his virtuosic trombone and trumpet skills, as well as his soulful vocals and charismatic stage presence.
In 2005, Trombone Shorty released his debut album, “The 12th of Never,” which showcased his unique blend of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and R&B influences. Since then, he has released several critically acclaimed albums, including “Backatown” (2010), “For True” (2011), and “Say That to Say This” (2013).
Trombone Shorty’s music is characterized by its infectious grooves, vibrant horn arrangements, and high-energy performances. He and his band, Orleans Avenue, have become known for their electrifying live shows, which blend elements of jazz, funk, rock, and soul into an exhilarating musical experience.
In addition to his solo career, Trombone Shorty has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including U2, Foo Fighters, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Galactic, among others. He has also performed at prestigious venues and events around the world, including the White House, the Grammy Awards, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
