We don’t say this too often. But New York’s Alan Chapell is a true storyteller. His songs paint such beautiful, and at times painful, images of everyday life. Today sees the release of new single “Suddenly”, from his upcoming LP, The Underground Music Show. Upon first listen, it sounds like an upbeat, fist-pumping rocker. The first verse builds slowly into the rocking “Can’t Stop!” chorus. But when you dive into the lyrics, it’s got a real heavy, but so achingly poignant message.
Suddenly you’re out of time. You lost your way.
Suddenly the music starts – the band will play.
Suddenly you can’t stop, you can’t stop, you can’t stop, you can’t stop
Thinking ‘bout the people that you used to know when you love…leave behind.
It’s about aging. It’s about remembering. It’s about celebrating; not mourning. And it’ll really get you in the feels.
Chapell began writing his latest album, The Underground Music Show during a time when live music had completely shut down. You can hear a sense of loneliness, or maybe just nostalgia in the songs. When was life going to get back to normal? WAS life ever going to get back to normal.
Having recorded with such luminaries as Jerry Hairrsion (Talking Heads) and Jerry Ienner (Bay City Rollers, Three Dog Night) and played with the likes of the Gin Blossoms, Lisa Loeb & Bighead Todd, Chapell has learned from the greats and in a rather short time, created a world of music that’s all his own.
“More than ever, people want to feel like they genuinely belong to something. Similar to how you go to church or yoga or whatever you do within a group in order to ease your soul. For me, the goal is always to draw inspiration from the collective – whether it’s during a more intimate solo concert or with my entire five-piece band. I want to process the human experience with you; to dream with you. Although mostly, I just want to have a good time with you!”
“Suddenly” can be found on Chapell’s new LP, The Underground Music Show, releasing July 19th.
