It is always a special occasion when the Scottish legend who is Robin Guthrie releases new music. This week, he will once again appear on the music radar of many folks across the planet as Friday brings the release of his new EP. Titled ‘Mockingbird Love’, it consists of four tracks, once of which – ‘My Courtesan’ – is now available to stream on Guthrie’s Bandcamp site. A glistening stream of sonic delight, the Grangemouth-born music icon offers us a beautiful autumn gift.

As he usually does, the EP will be released via his own imprint via Soleil Après Minuit with distribution for North America being handled by Darla Records and European distro happening via Cargo. This EP is the first in a series of releases that Guthrie will be releasing this year. What other releases are in the pipeline? Only time will tell, but we’ll be sure to cover these delights – one by one.

Last year, Guthrie released his album ‘Another Flower’ with Harold Budd, a long term collaborator of Guthrie’s, which was unfortunately followed by Budd’s death in December 2020.  ‘Mockingbird Love’ is a welcome affair and one we recommend you listen to fully before hitting repeat. The ‘lead track’, if we must call it that, is a good indication of the loveliness this new release presents. Listeners heads-up! Just press play. Do it. Do it. Do it!

“Of late I’ve been very focused on my instrumental music, which is increasingly an intense endeavour, all the more so as I don’t really share it with anyone. So here I am, finally, with some words about my next releases. ‘Mockingbird Love’, a four track EP, is the first small collection of music that I have felt comfortable to release for a while. This is my October. ‘Mockingbird Love’ is concise, to the point, with a big sound and baritone guitars. But it’s just an appetizer as my November release and subsequent December releases will show. I have everything in production now and, hmmm, what could go wrong?” says Robin Guthrie.

Robin Guthrie has certainly been the most prolific member, offering a steady and stellar stream of material over the years. Having formed Violet Indiana with Siobhan de Maré (formerly of Mono) following Cocteau Twins’ dissolution, he has since strongly focused on creating instrumental music, while also releasing collaborative albums with Harold Budd, John Foxx (Ultravox) andMark Gardener (Ride).

Apart from the film scores for Gregg Araki’s ‘Mysterious Skin’ and ‘White Bird In a Blizzard’, which were co-written with Harold Budd, Guthrie has also scored the film ‘3:19’Kaboom and the TV series ‘Now Apocalypse’

More recently, Robin produced and mixed the new Heligoland album ‘This Quiet Fire’, as well as creating remixes for artists such as Hatchie,Fawns of LoveResplandor,UmmagmaUlrich Schnauss and Tamaryn at his studio in France.

‘Mockingbird Love’ will be released on CD as well as digitally on all major platforms. Stream ‘My Courtesan’ now via Bandcamp, where the ‘Mockingbird Love’ EP can be pre-ordered ahead of time (including these very limited edition CDs) https://robinguthrie.bandcamp.com/album/mockingbird-love. In the meantime, do have a listen to Robin’s latest album with his dear friend, the late and quite great Harold Budd.
