New England’s finest post-wave quintet, The Daylilies, were formed in 2016 and feature Boston rock veterans Ad Frank (…and the Fast Easy Women, Lifestyle), Mike Quinn (Reverse, Dragstrip Courage), Adam Goodwin (PermaFrost) as well as relative newcomers Laura England Klain (Lovina Falls) and Amy Gee (Linnea’s Garden, Endation). Drawing on this extensive and highly impressive experience, their sound can most easily be described as “pop,” though electronic rock, post-grunge and new wave are also frequently accurate. Cell tower triangulation finds their sound somewhere between Garbage, The Cars and Low, with intermittent flashes of David Bowie.
“Pétillant”, their brand new single on The Sound Cove, reflects the exuberance of coming out of a dark time not only unscathed, but kinder and stronger. Named after a sparkling wine varietal, the song is a three-minute celebration of the joy of enduring friendship. Produced by Mike Quinn at Mad Oak Studios, “Pétillant” dares to give such rock classics as “Any Way You Want It” and “Just What I Needed” a run for their money!
Their previous effort, the debut full-length album, “From America…The Daylilies” (Red on Red Records), was completed during the pandemic and reflects the chaos and despair that took place between the band’s formation and the albums’ release. It has been described by Bertrand Tappaz (Voix de Garages. Grenoble, France) as “…a very beautiful album which escapes classifications with its sauce of Indie Pop, College Rock & timeless Power Pop…both a little mischievous and a little melancholic, the Daylilies revive the good old days of the ‘New Wave’ (Elvis Costello, The Cars, etc.) when no one seemed to care about cliques but rather about writing really good songs!”
Guitarist Ad Frank has these observations about the single/video:
“The song is clearly about all of us coming back together after Covid to reclaim what we had and make it better-and make ourselves kinder, except I didn’t know that until I saw the video. I never know what songs are about until I see the video!”
Likewise, Wout de Natris (Wono Magazine, The Netherlands) stated, “The Daylilies span decades of music without, somehow, if not to say miraculously, sounding outdated for a single second. The band does everything right on the album.”
The Daylilies and the Sound Cove will celebrate the release of Pétillant on Saturday, October 5, 8 pm at The Jungle in Somerville, Massachusetts, along with heavy friends Happy Little Clouds and Ruby Grove.
