Tampa, Florida is known for many things. But soft, sweet indie pop is not one of them. Don’t get us wrong. They’ve got a vibrant music scene. But it tends to skew towards punk. Never Heavy is the project of singer/songwriter Steve Alex, whose day job is fronting the band Four Star Riot. But today, they release a song (and album) that is just dripping with nostalgia.
We’re the never-do wells
Laughing from the sideline
While they all cheer for
The home team crushing in a landslide
There’s a matter of factualness to his lyrics that calls to mind luminaries like Chris Staples and Mojave 3’s Neil Halstead. These are indie rock anthems. “Lost With You”, and the other nine tracks that make up Never Heavy is One Full of Light, are light and airy. The compositions have just enough instrumentation to keep the songs from flying away.
About the inspiration for “Lost With You”, Alex says it’s “For the kids in the back of the bleachers. They’re lovable losers, but they’ve got each other.” We feel that.
Never Heavy is One Full of Light, out today on Vital Records.
