Following his eponymous debut album, released in late 2023 via Britain’s Reveal Records, legendary Scottish singer-songwriter John Douglas is back with a personalized moonlit video for the song ‘Oranges & Apples’, the second acoustic video filmed in Hyndland, Glasgow, the first being ‘I Just Want To Go Home’.  Best known for his stellar songcrafting talent, Douglas’ contribution has been integral in shaping the sound of and ensuring the enduring legacy of his band Trashcan Sinatras.

“‘Oranges & Apples’ is a song very close to my heart. It’s a love song to a fellow artist… the late Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. He ploughed his own furrow and showed all who followed how to be your eccentric, individual, glorious self. Stay true to you. Paint, sing, write, sculpt, carve, dance your own way through this playground. Hang on to your wonder at this world. Syd did. He’s away now… gone, but resonating on. As the song says.. now everything is enhanced by him,” says John Douglas.

This is the latest development in a series of wonderful developments for Douglas and the Trashcans, who recently enjoyed the UK Top-40 charting of their debut album ‘Cake’ 33 years after it was originally released. And now, they can also share The Trashcan Sinatras documentary, produced by international award-winning Irish journalist Ken Sweeney. This documentary tells the 35-year story of the Irvine band, featuring first hand accounts from band members, re-enactments of dramatic moments in the band’s history, and unique solo acoustic performances by John Douglas of some of the band’s most-loved songs. Sweeney’s long-standing friendship with the band dates back to the early ‘90s when he himself was part of indie band Brian and attended the Trashcans’ early gigs. Sweeney takes listeners to significant locations in the band’s history, including their original Shabby Road studio in Kilmarnock with fascinating recollections by John Douglas and fellow band members about their journey to becoming one of Scotland’s most beloved bands.

Soon we shall also reveal news about John Douglas’ forthcoming ‘Lost in North America Tour’, with support from two American artists consecutively – Lily Vakili of Vakili Band, a savvy street poet who finds the sweet spot between Patti Smith, Grace Slick and Janis Joplin, and singer-songwriteLauren Calve, whose new album ‘Shift’earned her the 2024 Wammie Award for Best Country/Americana Album.

John Douglas’ debut album is an intimate experience, recorded live without overdubs at Glasgow’s Kyoti Studio with renowned producer Mark Freegard (New Model Army, Lush, The Breeders, Del Amitri, Marillion). Reflecting Douglas’ candor, this 11-track collection features original material and new recordings of favourite Trashcan Sinatras’ material, plus his own rendition of the Prefab Sprout classic ‘We Let The Stars Go’. This record is available on CD and digitally via Bandcamp, as well as from fine online platforms.
