Not so long ago, we introduced you to a Swedish-Australian indie pop-rock outfit called Tiny Fighter, who has been steadily pumping out great music over the past few years. Today we present a related project – not so much in terms of the sound or even genre, but due to the fact that it involves one of the two key figures behind that project.
Kaapstaad is the solo electronic project of Tim Spelman, who is not only mastermind of Tiny Fighter, but also stands behind the post-rock project Fire To The Stars. Kaapstaad is an outlet for his more introspective, downtempo solo creations. It’s both calming and meditative, raising vibrations.
In this new incarnation, he presents his debut single ‘Night’, which, in one’s mind’s fantasy, sounds like a blend of Michael Nyman, Good Weather For An Airstrike, Elskavon and Endless Melancholy.
It’s no wonder that he manages to produce that kind of sound, considering that the artists he indicates as having influenced his sound also includes Neils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds, Ludovico Enaudi, BVG, Agnes Obel and Tibeauthetraveller.
Tim Spelman explains: “Night’ was originally composed for a short film score that never saw the light of the day. Intended as a lullaby-meets-soundscape, the idea was to combine a simple melody with field recordings taken out in a Swedish forest at night – that’s the rain, insects and crackles you can hear in the background of the song. Whilst the film soundtrack never eventuated, I was very happy with both the process and the product – something very different to the indie-pop/post-rock of my previous bands. So happy, in fact, it gave birth to an entirely new project – Kaapstaad. Of which ‘Night’ is my very first single.”
After accumulating more than 1 million views on YouTube and 800K streams on Spotify with Tiny Fighter, Spelman used the downtime imposed by covid lockdowns to indulge his original passion for film & game scores. Moving between his two homes of Sweden and Australia, Kaapstaad took on a life of its own. With support from Swedish collaborators Marcus Wallberg and Tommy Wilen, the project has morphed into a standalone project in its own right.
‘Night’ was performed, recorded and produced in Stockholm, Sweden and the Sunshine Coast, Australia by Tim Spelman. While this single is available everywhere digitally at https://filterlabel.streamlink.to/night or directly from the artist via Bandcamp at kaapstaad.bandcamp.com, we can already look forward to his next Kaapstaad single ‘Aula’ , out May 6.
