New music this week from the States, in the form of duo, They Travel at Night. Two gents, from just a couple hundred KMs southwest of us, with wildly different influences that combine to form something unique and needed in today’s landscape. Their intention is for the vocals/lyrics to be on an even playing field with the instrumentation.

They Travel at Night want to be in the business of creating moments in music. That noise you weren’t expecting, that dynamic buildup, that blissful transition, that moment of discomfort before things even out again. Just like life, you might skip over these moments multiple times without paying attention. But once you do notice them, they slow everything down for a second and brings details into focus. Simply put, They Travel at Night just wants to make music that makes whatever you’re doing feel cooler.

Lou Scanlon and Chuck Howard have both been in various bands and projects in the Detroit area going back to the early 2000’s. While they hadn’t collaborated since college, they always had a lot to discuss musically. Both can talk about bands, influences and the intricacies of songs well past the point that most people get bored. Their tastes overlap enough to be familiar, but bring enough differences to share something new, and they have always respected each other’s opinions. So finally, it was time to work on music together. Both are willing to try anything and always encourage trying something new and giving any idea a real chance. This supportive and experimental environment has unlocked new levels of creativity for both of them.

Their new single they’ve just dropped is a synth-pop mashup of bloops and bleeps. The vocals are heavily distorted; but not so much that you can’t clearly hear the lyrics. “Go On” started out as a relatively sparse instrumental idea from Lou, made up of one guitar loop and a solo, until Howard showed what it could become. From there, they built onto the song layer by layer.”

We hear you talking to no one.
We feel you feeling the sunshine.
We see you stare in the morning.

The Scanlon penned lyrics delve into the afterlife, envisioning those that have passed before saying, upon our arrival, “We’re waiting for you now.” It’s a wild ride. We’re eager to see where they take us next.

“Go On” is out now. Entropy releases February of ’24
