Americana/folk band, Satin Nickel, has unveiled the video of the title track from their recently released album, Shadow of Doubt. Instead of devising a storyline for the music video, DP Nick Snow let the song speak for itself by putting together imagery surrounding and engulfing each of the band members as they find their own light in these difficult times.

Inspired by the story of Doubting Thomas, “Shadow of Doubt” turns its moral on its head. Co-frontperson Morgan Hollinsgworth explains, “My middle name is Thomas, and every time I heard the story, I was always frustrated that Thomas was criticized for not believing what the disciples told him and waiting until he saw Jesus with his own eyes. I thought, ‘Why should he be criticized for questioning and wanting more proof?'” He adds, “In this era, I continue to see people looked down upon for thinking for themselves. I see millions of people blindly following religions, bosses, political leaders, etc. who claim to speak of truth and love. Yet, they deny basic facts and spew so much hateful rhetoric toward people they don’t even know. They’re told that if they work hard, they’ll be rewarded, while those in power steal the money and resources needed to survive. This song demands that facts and honesty be embraced, and that doubt is not only acceptable, but it is vital to the search for truth and love.”

Satin Nickel began as a collaboration between Hollingsworth (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and fellow songwriter Samantha Aneson (vocals, guitar, banjo). Combining Hollingsworth’s aggressive approach to the Americana narrative with Aneson’s sentimental and introspective approach to folk music, they found their contrasting styles complemented each other, forming a powerful dichotomy, smooth as satin and hard as a nickel. In the winter of 2018, they met fellow theater artists Nikola Balac (drums) and Ariana Karp (cello) and released their debut self-titled EP. Adding bassist Andrew Shewaga to the group, Satin Nickel became a full-bodied quintet and recorded Shadow of Doubt.

A collection of songs about starting life over again after being dragged through bitter and tumultuous situations, Shadow of Doubt was born out of collaboration, after Aneson and Hollingsworth moved to NY from their respective homes in CA. After both going through messy and toxic relationships that left them alone in a new city, they were able to invest the energy from the trials they faced into a cathartic and artistic endeavor. Shadow of Doubt was released on April 10th, 2020.
