Canadian folk-roots musician Tania Joy shares her new single “Blink” – a song written from the perspective of life changing beyond one’s control, through denial, uncertainty, and then finding empowerment on the other side. The video premiered on Americana UK. Watch here. The single was produced by Hill Kourkoutis (Digging Roots, Leela Gilday, Madison Violet) and will be featured on her forthcoming album due out this fall, along with previously released singles “Planks and Marietta” and “The Drought”.

“‘Blink’ came to me out of nowhere after a period of writer’s block,” says Tania. “I remember giving myself permission to write a bad song in order to clear the cobwebs and the fear that comes with staring at a blank page. In the same sitting, I put pen to paper for what was to become ‘Blink’ and later took it into a session with songwriting mentor James Linderman where we discovered the descending bassline that grounds the song.”

The song was inspired by that feeling of being blindsided by a break-up and being left to reconcile every aspect of a relationship. What you know to be true and what you don’t know. The hook ‘In the Blink of an eye. I can change your life’ has a dual meaning – mystery and contrast. Producer Hill says, “When we spoke about the song we decided the nature of it was hypnotic and spellbound. Imagery started to emerge of a lover casting a spell and that influenced the classic and dramatic production approach we took. It’s a bit of I put a spell on you. It’s part suave. It’s part alluring. The ultimate goal was to create an immersive experience that was cinematic and powerful.” Its complexity is spellbinding, and at any given time one perspective or the other is true. In the aftermath there is strength and defiance, striking a hypnotic cinematic tone that conveys power in leaving the past behind and moving forward with confidence.

The single is accompanied by a new video directed by Luke Camozzi of Camozzi Films. “The inspiration was film noir to support the cinematic approach of the song,” says Luke. “When we were on set everything just fell into the right place. The artists’ performance was complimented perfectly by the shapes, shadows, and angles. It was a great experience helping bring this vision to life.”

“Blink” is the follow-up to Tania’s recent singles “Planks and Marietta” and “The Drought”. “Planks and Marietta” was her first protest song. The single was released exclusively on Bandcamp on February 16th with all proceeds from downloads being directed to Black Lives Matter. And “The Drought” is a moseying country-soul musing on the loss of love. The singles garnered buzz from CBC Radio One, CBC Music “The Block”, The Bluegrass Situation, Eat North, Exclaim, Folkal Point, Folk Roots Radio, FYI Music News, Great Dark Wonder, Hunter’s Bay Radio, Just Us Folk, SlowCity, Tinnitist and The Star.
