When brothers Nate and Jeremy Barrett were kids, they misheard the Nasa countdown as “3…2…1… Bash Dogs!” and loved the phrase so much they adopted it as their band name. The Bash Dogs have been bashing away since their elementary years and twenty years later they’re still going strong. With a current lineup featuring Nate Barrett on vocals/guitar, Jeremy Barrett on vocals/drums, Nathan Schmok on bass and Kyle Gaffney on guitar, they quickly grew a following in the southern CA area. Known for their “Soul Kitchen” 60s-themed dance parties and infectiously energetic live performances, the group had a hugely-successful weekly residency at House of Blues’ Foundation Room in the OC. Since the quarantine hit, the band has channelled all that energy into recording new material and music videos for their first LP, “Dog Days” – out this summer.
“Who’s Your Daddy?” is the next single off the album they’re gearing up to drop both digitally and on vinyl. A self-proclaimed “surf disco” band, frontman and writer Nate jokes about the content of the song: “It’s not a deep song, not about being ‘the man,’ or ‘your daddy;’ it’s more of a party song. Pure fun, tongue in cheek. Sure, we’re a party band, but out of all the songs, this is genuinely about either a person or a puppy… The lyrics could apply to both.”
There’s no shortage of good times in the music video, which features the band rolling around Malibu, pulling over to partake in champagne and puppy kisses and meet up with some mysterious ladies. The group raised such a spectacle while filming it that the cops stopped twice to question them, but let them continue because there’s no law against being a fun-loving group of masked musicians.
