As palpable anticipation builds towards their forthcoming debut album, Plain Jane, due on October 30 via Photo Finish Records, rising pop trio Moody Joody today unveil their latest single, the propulsive, effortlessly catchy electro-pop delight, “Fantasyland,” which recalls some of the most thrilling indie-pop bangers of the early 2010s.
“My baby holds my hand when I cry… lying in my fantasyland…staying here as long as I can,” co-lead vocalists Kayla Hall and Kaitie Forbes sing over shimmering synths and reflective reverb.
The idea for “Fantasyland,” says co-lead vocalist/synth player Hall, “was inspired by a conversation I had with my therapist. I had been caught up in a toxic cycle with an ex and she candidly told me I was living in a “Fantasyland” in regards to thinking the dynamic was going to change. I was still in a place where I was romanticizing this relationship dynamic and this person and who we were as people. One of my favorite things about this song is the double meaning of the phrase “lying in my fantasyland” because it’s both this carefree “oh I’m laying here with my head in the clouds la di da” and also it’s a lie – I’m lying to myself. The song sonically feels that way to me too – this juxtaposition of shimmering, glimmering, fun with a very sarcastic, rose-colored glasses lyric.”
Adds co-lead vocalist/guitarist Forbes,”Millenial hopecore is back! While we didn’t totally know it in the moment we were writing it, this song takes us back to 2010 Passion Pit, Phoenix, the naked & famous, M83, a time of tumblr and musical optimism to cure existential dread. It started as a line from Kayla’s therapist, and ended in our most dancey, get-lost-in-the-moment & dance-it-all-away track on the album. Best listened to under a disco ball wearing American Apparel with your besties.”
Multi-instrumentalist/producer Andrew Pacheco recalls debuting “Fantasyland” in early July at a sold out show at New York City’s Nightclub 101 and says “we danced in the crowd with everyone and it was such a party that it made me even more excited to finally have this song out and part of our live set.”
Having recently performed a sold-out show in NYC at the aforementioned Nightclub 101 gig, and now set to perform at the Maine’s 8123 Fest next January, Moody Joody are prepping for an undoubtedly exhilarating next chapter to accompany Plain Jane’s release.
