Ike Reilly, always a raconteur and lyrical wordsmith who has dazzled listeners for decades with his witty, thought-provoking storyteller songs, has emerged from the studio with another instant-favorite album, “Blind and Surrounded.” But this time, he’s enlisted the songwriting and creative help of his son, Shane Reilly, alongside his longtime firecracker of a band, the Ike Reilly Assassination. The result is a beautifully balanced blend of Ike songs and Shane songs, a father-son collaboration that shines from the first note. Both tap into the passed-over of society, giving voice to the people whose stories don’t always get told; Ike’s songs have his typical razor-sharp wit and bite, while Shane’s, equally eloquent, deftly deal a bit more optimism and hope. The shared genes give the album a magical familial harmony – in addition to Ike’s and Shane’s vocals, backing vocals from Ike’s other two sons round out the sound. We sat down with Ike and Shane recently to get the lowdown on their teamwork on “Blind and Surrounded.”

Hi, Ike and Shane! You have an amazing new album out in June called “Blind and Surrounded.” What is the story behind this album and how did it come together?

IKE REILLY: Well, thank you! We’ve been touring together for the past four or five years. I mean Shane has been touring with our band for the past four or five years. Shane‘s been writing songs for a long time as well. Many of his songs have become mainstays in our live set.

We thought this would be a great chance to introduce Shane songs to people, and I was fortunate enough to be able to produce his stuff. So we combined songs that I’ve written and songs that he’s written for this release. All of it was recorded at my studio in Libertyville, Illinois, with our great band the Ike Reilly assassination, which is PhilKarnats, Dave Cottini, Adam Krier, Pete Cimbalo, Tommy O’Donnell, and my old friend, Ed Tinley, mixed this album, with the exception of “Waiting for the Planes,” which was mixed by Mario McNulty. I forgot to mention that my sons, Kevin and Mickey Reilly, often tour with us and do a major part of the background vocals on “Blindand Surrounded,” too.

One of the songs on the new album, “We Better Get Packed,” is wonderful and stood out to me. What can you tell us about that song? What inspired you to write the song?

IKE: It began on a typically unproductive day. I was wasting/killing time, just peering out the window of my studio, wondering where my neighbor, Leon, has been. Then I started to think about how people disappear and move in and out of your life, mostly strangers and acquaintances. That line of thought sent me down the road of what people are running from and why people leave-  I guess when you hear it in the song, it sounds a little more existential, like we’re leaving the Earth or something. This is far more literal and practical, and no one would know that if I didn’t address it here. I never saw Leon again.

I also really loved “Gone for Forever.” How did that song come to be, and what is its message?

SHANE REILLY: I’m glad you dig it! I wrote that pretty quickly, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. I love Ike’s production and that ’50s sound with the electric guitar and the whirly. I also love that all four Reilly boys are singing on it! As far as the message goes, it’s a love song and a reminder that everything is going to end for all of us and that life is short. I’m not banking on an afterlife. It also touches on family, love, connection, and realizing what’s important and what’s not important. I wake up each day buzzing to be alive, knowing that we’re here for a blip in time and that it could all end at any moment. That may sound somber, but it’s true. The song is more about living than it is about dying, that’s for sure.

What do you hope this album conveys to those who listen to it?

IKE: Most importantly, I hope it entertains them. It’s great when albums you make become an important part of listeners’ lives, and they become part of their regular musical rotation. Although this is a very narrative and lyrical record, we think it’s also melodic and weirdly comforting.

SHANE: I hope it’s thought-provoking and makes people feel good or optimistic. I’ve also heard from a lot of people that it’s comforting, which is better than being unsettling. That’s likely a combination of the tunes and the family dynamic.

The album title – how did you choose it? What does it mean to you?

IKE: The title comes from a lyric in the song “Waiting for the Planes.” I feel that way any time I hear anybody from this administration speak – out-numbered and out-gunned by maniacal fools – but fools can be beat.

How does it feel to be releasing this album into the world for all to hear?

IKE: It’s always exciting to release an album. It’s interesting to hear how it affects people who aren’t as close to it as we are. This one is particularly special, because I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I’d be making a record with anybody in my family, particularly a child. Obviously, Shane is not a child anymore, but he’s still my child. I don’t wanna get caught being too sentimental, but I’m pretty proud of it and proud of him.

What has been the most exciting thing to happen for you in the past year? What are you most looking forward to for the remainder of 2026?

SHANE: We were asked to play at the Defend Minnesota show at First Avenue in Minneapolis, which was a benefit show for the families of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. That was an emotional and surreal experience given the circumstances and our close ties to the Twin Cities. We opened the show and Bruce Springsteen closed it. When we got on stage to sing “Power to the People” with him, he kissed me on the cheek and told us he was a big Ike fan, which I didn’t know, but it makes a lot of sense and was really encouraging to hear. I didn’t kiss my wife for weeks after I got back from that gig. She was disappointed but understood.

I’m looking forward to putting out this record and playing the songs live. It’s all such a privilege that I don’t take for granted. I’m also looking forward to writing and recording some new songs.

Got any tour plans? Where can fans see you?
